Will There be an Ava Sequel?

Directed by Tate Taylor (‘The Girl on the Train’), the action thriller film ‘Ava’ tells the story of the eponymous character (Jessica Chastain), a highly-skilled assassin who begins questioning the reasons why some of her targets had to die. The organization that she works for deems her unstable and dangerous because of this and decides to eliminate her. Now, Ava must rely on her years of training to ensure the safety of herself and her family.

Following its release, ‘Ava’ garnered positive reviews, with critics praising the film for the action sequences and the performance of its lead star, who makes a seamless transition into a legitimate action hero with this project. The film ends on an inconclusive note, which must have made many of you wonder whether there will be an ‘Ava’ sequel. Here is everything we know about it.

Ava Sequel Release Date

‘Ava’ released on August 27, 2020, through DirecTV Cinema in the U.S. It subsequently had a limited theatrical and video on demand release on September 25, 2020, through its primary distributor, Vertical Entertainment. On December 6, 2020, it became available on Netflix.

As for a sequel of the film, the filmmakers have not put out any official statement on the matter. Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film experienced a low run at the box office. If its Netflix release turns out to be a success, then a sequel will become a real possibility. If the film’s sequel does go into production in the next few months or so, we can expect ‘Ava 2’ to release sometime in 2023 or later.

Ava Sequel Cast: Who can be in it?

Aside from Chastain, ‘Ava’ stars John Malkovich as Duke, Common as Michael, Geena Davis as Bobbi, Colin Farrell as Simon, Jess Weixler as Judy, Diana Silvers as Camille, Ioan Gruffudd as Peter, and Joan Chen as Toni. Malkovich, Farrell, and Gruffudd will not return for the sequel as their characters have been killed. The rest of the cast will most likely reprise their roles.

Ava Sequel Plot: What can it be About?

Right before Ava kills her targets, she asks them what they have done to make someone want to kill them. These types of questions make Simon, a top official in the organization, doubt her mental well-being. He speaks to her handler Duke, who was also his own mentor at one point. Although Simon promises Duke that he will let Ava have some rest, he issues a kill order. But Ava kills the executive he sent to do the job. Duke confronts Simon, and in the ensuing fight, is killed.

The film’s climax involves an epic showdown between Duke’s two students. Although their initial fight ends in a stalemate, Ava follows Simon as he leaves, assures him that she will leave his family alone, and kills him. She then goes to her sister’s home to tell her to leave the country with their mother. As she exits the apartment building, Simon’s daughter Camille, who also works for the organization, begins following her.

The ending of ‘Ava’ leaves the protagonist’s fate open to the audience’s interpretations. In the sequel, Camille might come after Ava, seeking vengeance for her father’s death. Ava has promised Simon that she will not harm his family. It will be interesting to see what she does when one of his family members tries to harm her. The organization might send more operatives after her, which will probably lead to the introduction of a new antagonist.
