‘Wolf Creek’ is an Australian horror web television series that airs on streaming service Stan in Australia, on the POP network in the US, and Fox in the UK. Created by Greg McLean, the show is a spin-off of Australian horror films ‘Wolf Creek’ (2005) and ‘Wolf Creek 2’ (2013), and focuses on the exploits of a crazed serial killer.
A relatively recent show, Season 1 of ‘Wolf Creek’, consisting of six episodes, premiered on May 12, 2016, and received largely favourable reviews from television critics and viewers alike. In October 2016, it was reported that ‘Wolf Creek’ was likely to return for a second season and a third film. Months after the report surfaced, Stan, in February 2017, officially renewed the show for a second season, filming for which began in South Australia in July 2017. Subsequently, on December 15, 2017, Season 2, also consisting of six episodes, made its way to viewers’ screens, and was again received favourably by viewers and television critics. Since then, fans of the show have been clamouring for a third season, but nothing has been announced as of now. Here’s everything we know about it.
Wolf Creek Cast: Who is in it?
‘Wolf Creek’ can be said to be a slasher show, and the slasher, in this case, is a crazed serial killer by the name of Mick Taylor. Mick was present in both movies, and is also present in the show, and John Jarratt, who played Mick in the movies, takes up the role in the show too. Owing to the fact that Seasons 1 and 2 of the show follow two different stories, the rest of the cast members are season-specific.
In Season 1, Lucy Fry plays the role of 19-year-old Eve Thorogood, an American tourist who survives an attack by Mick and embarks on a quest for revenge. Dustin Clare, meanwhile, slips into the shoes of police detective Sullivan Hill, who helps Eve and tries to track down and apprehend Mick. With John Jarratt playing Mick, this wraps up the main cast. There are also several recurring cast members in Season 1, including Deborah Mailman as Bernadette O’Dell, Damian De Montemas as Inspector Darwin, Miranda Tapsell as Fatima Johnson, Matt Levett as Kevin Small, Richard Cawthorne as Kane Jurkewitz, and Maya Stange and Robert Taylor as Eve’s family members Ingrid Thorogood and Roland Thorogood, respectively.
In Season 2, Jarratt returns as Mick, while Tess Haubrich and Matt Day join him in the list of main cast members as Rebecca and Brian, respectively. Season 2, of course, also has several recurring cast members including Felicity Price as Nina, Julian Pulvermacher as Oskar, Jason Chong as Steve, Adam Fiorentino as Johnny, Charlie Clausen as Danny, Christopher Kirby as Bruce, Laura Wheelwright as Kelly, Elsa Cocquerel as Michelle, to name a few.
If ‘Wolf Creek’ does return for a third season, we can be sure that John Jarratt will reprise his role as Mick Taylor. The other cast members, in all probability, will be subject to change as a third season is likely to have a story which is separate from the ones in the first and second season.
Wolf Creek Plot: What is it about?
‘Wolf Creek’ exemplifies what slasher shows are all about and follows the exploits of the murderous Mick Taylor as he terrorizes people across Australia.
In the first season, 19-year-old American tourist Eve has a close shave with death when Mick descends upon her family and slaughters them in cold blood. Eve is shot and left for dead, but she survives the ordeal. With the help of police detective Sullivan Hill’s case files, Eve then begins looking for Mick, determined to avenge the deaths of her family members. As the show progresses, and unlucky set of events leads to Eve’s imprisonment, but she manages to escape and steal a gun, and starts hunting down Mick. Meanwhile, Mick hears that an American girl is looking for him, and he sets out to find Eve, leaving a trail of carnage behind him. Detective Hill, meanwhile, also commences a search for Eve, and when he finally finds her, they hatch a plan to work together and kill Mick. But, things don’t go as planned, and Detective Hill gets abducted by Mick, who uses him as bait to draw out Eve. In a final, explosive confrontation, Eve manages to get the better of Mick, and presumably kills him. However, evil never dies, and Mick manages to escape almost certain death and survives to wreak more havoc on the people of Australia.
In the second season, Mick returns to his murderous ways and manages to drug and abduct a bus full of tourists consisting of a German family, an American couple, an Australian gay couple, two best friends from Canada, an Iraq War veteran, and an English psychologist, among others. He then takes them to the middle of nowhere, and sadistically starts killing off the members of the tourist group one by one, leaving the rest horrified. As the show progresses, Mick has his sadistic fun as he tracks and kills the survivors, and this leads up to another explosive finale where Mick finally confronts the remaining survivors and kills them, leaving one alive.
If ‘Wolf Creek’ gets renewed for a third season, we can expect to see more gory, murderous action as Mick descends on other unsuspecting prey and plays his vicious game.
As far as reception is concerned, ‘Wolf Creek’ does enjoy a decent amount of critical acclaim, and has a score of 77% on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, with the critics consensus for Season 1 reading, “Despite a few narrative inconsistencies, ‘Wolf Creek’ is a clever, powerful extension of the films that adds more thrills and chills with the same captivating characters.” Viewers, too, seem to have enjoyed the gory show, and it has a decent overall rating of 7.2/10 on IMDb.
Wolf Creek Season 3 Release Date: When is it coming out?
Since Season 2 premiered in December 2017, Stan has made no announcements pertaining to the renewal of ‘Wolf Creek’. While many fear that the show might not make a comeback, that might not be the case.
A lot is still up in the air, but show creator Greg McLean seems to have plans for a third season and a third movie, with the latter being the priority. Speaking to horror fan-site Bloody-Disgusting in April 2018, McLean had hinted at a return to the big screen, saying, “Wolf Creek 3 will happen, it’s a matter of finding the right time to shoot the movie.” As far as the chances of Season 3 happening are concerned, it’s understood that McLean first wants to acquire a large international audience for the first two seasons before making a third season. So, our best guess is the season 3 won’t release before 2021.
Thus, all that’s left for us to do is sit and wait and hope Stan makes a renewal announcement soon. We are keeping an eye out for news pertaining to the show’s future, and we’ll update this section when we hear more.
