In the episode titled ‘Suspicion in Silver City’ of NBC’s ‘Dateline,’ the primary focus is on the sudden, horrific killing of a 23-year-old nurse and mother of two named Cassy Farrington in New Mexico. When the news of her passing broke out, shockwaves were sent across the entire community, while immense grief took over her loved ones. As the investigation began going cold, Cassy’s family pushed for justice and kept searching for answers. Soon, a new detective brought a fresh perspective on the case, leading to the perpetrator.
Cassy Farrington Was Found in Her Bathtub by an Acquaintance
Darlene and Marc “Chuck” Brooks were elated when they gave birth to Cassy Marie Brooks on December 22, 1990, in Safford, Arizona. Accompanied by her two brothers, Eric Brooks and CodyBo Brooks, and her sister, Elizabeth, Cassy grew up in a loving and supportive household, having a knack for almost everything. Besides excelling on academic terms at her high school in Pima, Arizona, she was also active in several sports, including basketball, volleyball, softball, poms, swimming, and track. Cassy was also an integral member of FBLA and the National Honor Society. The winner of the Mini Miss Graham County title also took ballet lessons for about five years. Her dreams of becoming a doctor and helping people came to a halt when she got pregnant at 16 with Bradley “Brad” Scott Farrington’s baby.
After graduating from high school, she married Brad and moved out of her family’s home. Soon, she continued pursuing her dreams and attended Western New Mexico University to get a degree in Registered Nursing. Soon, she landed a job as a Registered Nurse at the Gila Regional Medical Center in Silver City, New Mexico. By then, she had become a mother of two children — Tristan Scott and Lila Zoey Marie. Unfortunately, her marriage couldn’t stand the test of time, leading Brad and Cassy to part ways in 2013. Not long after, she began dating David Berry, with whom she began building a future. At the time, she was living in a rented apartment in Silver City, looking forward to many things in life. However, her dreams were shattered when fate intervened on March 24, 2014.
When her parents learned that the mother of two hadn’t picked up her children from school, they sent one of her acquaintances, Charnelle, to check on her. As she entered the property, she made a horrific discovery and called 911. During the frantic call, she told the dispatcher, “And she’s been in the bathtub and she’s — I can’t even do CPR. She’s stiff.” As the police arrived at the scene of the crime, they found 23-year-old Cassy, wearing her nursing scrubs, dead in the bathtub. The detectives noticed no signs of forced entry. Upon inspecting the remains, they discovered bruises all over her body. However, the cause of her death was determined to be strangulation. Thus, a homicide investigation was immediately launched.
Cassy Farrington’s Past Came Back to Haunt Her
As part of the investigation, the detectives interviewed Cassy Farrington’s family and friends. Initially, the investigators also asked them if she had been suicidal, as they reportedly considered the possibility of her taking her own life. As per reports, the day after the tragedy, her landlord, Billy Lee, disposed of the carpet from the house and any other possible clues along with it. Finding it suspicious, the police interviewed Billy, who provided them with a solid alibi, which was corroborated by a coworker. He was then ruled out as a possible suspect in the case. Meanwhile, Cassy’s loved ones suspected her boyfriend, David Berry, of being involved in the killing as he allegedly acted in a strange manner. However, due to a lack of physical evidence and any leads, the case went cold.
Since Cassy’s ex-husband, Brad Scott Farrington, a former Silver City police officer, was not even questioned, her family believed that the lead detective was trying to protect his fellow officer. Thus, when they raised their concerns to the District Attorney’s Office, another detective took over the case. The new lead investigator wasted no time, focusing his attention on Brad and his relationship with Cassy. It turned out that the former couple was going through a heated custody battle at the time of her death. Cassy’s family told the detective that during the course of their volatile relationship, Brad was allegedly abusive towards his children. In one instance, he allegedly put his daughter in a headlock and pushed her against the wall. A few weeks before the homicide, Cassy’s son allegedly told her that Brad told him that he planned to kill Cassy and David.
The investigator referred to the autopsy that revealed that Cassy was killed by someone who knew defensive tactics, like the former Silver City police officer. Finally, on October 22, 2015, an arrest warrant was issued for Brad, who was tracked down in the Tucson area with the help of the US Marshals Southwest Investigation Fugitive Task Force in New Mexico. The following day, he was arrested near the Walgreens on Grant and Silverbell Roads and charged with Cassy’s murder. In August 2018, Brad Farrington stood trial for killing his ex-wife, Cassey Farrington. After four days of trial and four and a half hours of deliberations, on August 16, the jury found Brad guilty of first-degree murder. Ultimately, he was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years.
