Ceres Opanowski, also known as CC, was just a college student in January 1996 when she was left shaken by a sudden attack by her former boyfriend, Shawn M. Doyle. She gradually tried moving on with her life after surviving the attack, but it completely changed her. Nearly a decade later, she was left shocked upon hearing that he had killed a 33-year-old mother of two, Lori Ann Leonard, in Chittenango, New York. In CBS’ ’48 Hours: Facing a Monster,’ Ceres revisits her story, diving deeper into the trauma she carried after the attack. The episode also explores the details surrounding Lori’s homicide and how Ceres’ courage helped put Shawn behind bars.
CC Opanowski’s Testimony Helped Bring Her Former Boyfriend to Justice For Lori Leonard’s Murder
Ceres Opanowski, lovingly known as CC, was just 15 years old when she began dating her high school boyfriend, Shawn Doyle. According to her statements on the show, he eventually began living with her and her parents at their house, following which he became possessive of her. She further stated that when she finally enrolled in college, they agreed to continue their relationship, but Shawn allegedly became explosive when she said that she wouldn’t be able to come back home for the weekends. In September 1995, they finally parted ways. By January 27, 1996, she had finished her first semester of college and was at home with her college roommate, Shannon McCauliffe.
On that day, Shannon reportedly left Ceres’ house to return home and freshen up. According to reports, shortly after the former’s departure, Shawn arrived at the residence of Ceres and attacked her. Ceres further stated on the show that, amid the attack, she convinced him to let her pick up Shannon’s call since her friend was repeatedly calling her. When her friend sensed Ceres was in danger, she promptly called 911. Following that, he was arrested and charged with trespassing, harassment, and menacing. Ceres revealed on the show that when the case was scheduled to go on trial just eight months later, she informed the prosecutors that she would not be able to go through with the trial due to the trauma she experienced.
Ultimately, Shawn pleaded guilty to second-degree menacing and received a sentence of 3 years of probation. Following that, Ceres reportedly transferred colleges and moved several hours away from Hudson Falls. In the summer of 2005, she learned from her father that Shawn had been arrested for the homicide of a young mother of two, Lori Ann Leonard. Ceres stated that she was haunted by the choice she made as a “scared teenager” by not pursuing the charges against him further. So, she bravely agreed to testify against him during his January 2006 murder trial. Ceres stated, “I was relieved and happy that he was going to be punished for what he did,” while speaking about the day Shawn was convicted of second-degree murder.
CC Opanowski Has Expanded Rivertown Pilates to Multiple New York Locations
Ceres had always been driven to build a remarkable career. After graduating from high school, she initially enrolled in Sage Junior College of Albany to study law. However, following the ordeal, she eventually transferred colleges. In 2003, she graduated from IONA University with high honors and began her professional journey in the legal sector. Around the same time, she also sat for the LSAT. By 2005, she relocated to Los Angeles, California, where she discovered her passion for the holistic body movement. Ceres had always experienced pain, and she was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (JRA). After her move to Los Angeles, she soon realized that Pilates helped relieve her pain from the condition.
Ceres then received formal training through the Pilates Program at Physical Mind Institute. While completing her certification, she also stepped into the role of an Apprentice Teacher under the instructor, Maria Leone, at Body Line in California. She then moved on to work for Dr. Erik Swartz, the owner of Back to Total Health, in West Hollywood. In that position, Ceres actively worked with clients who came to the facility for rehabilitation of their shoulders, backs, necks, and other injuries. After she returned to New York, she joined the Pilates Studio of Rye as an Instructor. Ceres continued to hone her skills by teaching Pilates at The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, New York.
Sometime in the late 2000s or early 2010s, Ceres tapped into her entrepreneurial spirit and passion for Pilates, leading her to open Rivertown Pilates, a Pilates studio in Tarrytown, where she continues to work as an Instructor. Over almost two decades, she has gradually expanded Rivertown Pilates to several additional locations, including Hastings-on-Hudson, Irvington, and Dobbs Ferry. In her personal life, Ceres shared that she was ready to let go of the guilt she felt over not having the courage to pursue the charges after she was attacked. She now encourages others to be vigilant, noting, “Look at what’s happening in front of you and make sure someone knows.” Currently, Ceres appears to be focusing on her career and leading a quiet life away from the public eye.
