Christhian Torres Murder: Where is Avery Valentin-Bair Now?

In September 2016, residents near Locust Street in Reading, Pennsylvania, heard an argument break out that ended in a violent stabbing. When police arrived, they found Christhian Torres suffering from stab wounds sustained during the altercation. Several witnesses had reportedly seen the person responsible, giving investigators accounts of what had happened. Hulu’s ‘Clown Panic’ features the case as part of its broader examination of the clown panic that swept across the United States around 2016. Against the backdrop of widespread fear and unsettling reports involving people dressed as clowns, the incident offers a look at how an already tense atmosphere can intersect with real-world violence.

Christhian Torres Was Riding His Bike With Friends When He Was Killed

Christhian Segungo Torres was born on July 23, 2000, to Segundo Torres Ortiz and Melissa Gonzalez Torres. His family was settled in Reading, Pennsylvania, a small city that has struggled with a high crime rate for a long time. Christhian shared a close relationship with his siblings, Cristhian, Jonathan, Janesa, Angelica, Jazmari, and Alisha, and the family meant a great deal to him. Those who knew him described him as one of the nicest kids in the neighborhood, someone who carried a streak of happiness wherever he went. He loved spending time with his family, and his playful nature made him dear to everyone who knew him.

In 2016, Christhian was a sophomore at Reading High School. The 16-year-old was a bright student with promising prospects for his future. On September 25, 2016, he was riding his bike along the 1100 block of Locust Street, very close to his home, spending what seemed like a regular evening with his friends. His sister, Janesa, later recalled hearing a loud noise coming from the corner where Christhian was hanging out. Concerned, she rushed outside to see what had happened. As she approached the scene, she heard someone say, “He’s bleeding.” By the time she reached him, Christhian was lying on the ground with a stab wound to his chest. Emergency responders were called, but the teenager had succumbed to his injury by the time help arrived.

Christhian Torres’ Killer Attacked Him After a Confrontation Between Them

There were several witnesses to the incident, making it relatively straightforward for police to establish an account of what had transpired. According to court documents, Christhian was riding his bicycle with friends while wearing a clown mask on his forehead. The records state that a neighbor, Jeremy Martinez, became angry and allegedly punctured Christhian’s bicycle tires. A group of around 20 people confronted Martinez, who reportedly agreed to pay Christhian back for the damage. The argument appeared to have subsided, but tensions resurfaced soon afterward. According to the documents, when Avery Valentin-Bair’s mother allegedly spoke out against the repayment, Avery and Christhian became involved in another argument.

According to witness accounts, Avery allegedly made graphic remarks about Christhian’s mother, leading to a fight between the two. During the confrontation, Avery reportedly pulled out a knife and stabbed Christhian on the left side of his chest. Another boy named Darah Kim also sustained a cut on his hand. In the episode, Avery’s mother recalled that her son had been afraid of clowns since childhood and suggested that seeing Christhian wearing a mask may have unsettled him. Three days after the incident, Avery turned himself in to the police.

Investigators later found the knife at his home. With multiple witness accounts and the suspected weapon recovered, prosecutors believed they had a strong case against him. Avery was charged with first-degree murder and taken into custody. Detectives investigating the killing also considered the wider context of the clown panic that had spread across the country around that time. They believed Christhian’s clown mask, which he may have been wearing as a prank or in anticipation of Halloween, could have contributed to the confrontation. The case thus became part of a broader discussion about how the fear and unease surrounding clown sightings may have influenced real-life encounters.

Avery Valentin-Bair is Serving His Sentence in Pennsylvania Today

During Avery Valentin-Bair’s trial in March 2018, his defense team argued that he had acted in self-defense after allegedly being attacked by others in the group. They maintained that he had feared for his life and had only pulled out the knife in response to the perceived threat. The jury ultimately found him guilty of third-degree murder and aggravated assault but acquitted him of first-degree murder.

Avery was sentenced to a total of 22½ to 50 years in state prison, comprising 20 to 40 years for the murder and a consecutive sentence of 30 months to 10 years for the assault on Kim. In January 2020, the Pennsylvania Superior Court upheld both his conviction and sentence following his appeal. Avery is currently being held at the State Correctional Institution- Frackville (SCI Frackville) in Frackville, Pennsylvania. Details regarding his parole eligibility have not been made publicly available.
