Will There be an A Hat in Time 2?

2017’s adorably zany action Platformer ‘A Hat in Time’ was a pleasant surprise for many who played it. The game was initially funded on Kickstarter, managing to rake in double of its fundraising goals within just two days, and nearly ten times the initial goal by the time the funding concluded.

The game marketed itself as a spiritual successor to popular Third Person Platformer games such as ‘Psychonauts’ and ‘Super Mario 64’. ‘A Hat in Time’ was an instant indie success story, managing to deliver to the hype and selling over 1 million copies by the end of 2018. It seems only logical now that we see a potential ‘A Hat in Time 2’ somewhere down the line. Read on to find out if there will be ‘A Hat in Time 2’, and what we can expect from such a game.

What Can We Expect From A Hat in Time 2?

‘A Hat in Time’ is an Action Adventure Platformer game presented from a Third Person perspective in the vein of Rare’s pioneering 1998 game ‘Banjo-Kazooie’ and popular Nintendo 64 Platformers. The game features a semi Open World in which the player can freely travel between four large levels. The gameplay mainly consists of Third Person platforming, finding various collectibles, solve various puzzles and use the main character’s umbrella to fight enemies. The game’s progression system uses a currency called “Pons,” which is usually dropped by defeated enemies to upgrade abilities, as well as Yarn Balls for making new hats which completely new abilities.

The Steam page for ‘A Hat in Time’ describes the game as follows: “In A Hat in Time you play as a tiny space-travelling girl with a big tophat. Her adventure is halted when all her fuel, the Time Pieces, is lost and scattered across a nearby planet. Hat Kid must now jump, fight and stitch new hats to make her way into every nook and cranny of this new world in order to restore her fuel and resume her journey.”

The game’s captivating story line had you follow Hat Kid, a little girl who stitches hats with splendid magical power. As Hat Kid is returning to her home world in a spaceship along with some precious cargo, she is accosted by the local planet’s Mafia, who break open her spaceship door causing all her magical Time Pieces to fall down on the planet. As Hat Kid, you must now embark on a journey to recover all your Time Pieces as you meet new friends and foes and experience betrayal and redemption.

‘A Hat in Time’ also got a DLC expansion in September 2018 titled ‘Death Wish’. Hat Kid meets the contract ghost Snatcher, who offers you Stamps for completing challenge modes. A second DLC titled ‘Nyakuza Metro + Online Party’ came out in May of this year. An additional split screen Co-op was also added in some time after launch.

‘A Hat in Time 2’ is likely to further explore the rich world established in the first game in more detail, with a longer story campaign (the main story line of ‘A Hat in Time’ can be completed in 8-12 hours). The first game also came under some criticism for technical and performance issues, especially on consoles, likely due to its use of the outdated Unreal Engine 3. ‘A Hat in Time’ will surely adopt a more modern game engine, allowing for better performance and enhanced visual fidelity. Another criticism leveled against the game was its janky camera controls, which is another expected improvement for ‘A Hat in Time 2’. As with most sequels these days, we can also expect bigger and more bosses, as well as all new abilities and perhaps even weapons.

A Hat in Time 2 Developers: Who Could Be The People Behind It?

While ‘A Hat in Time’ came out over two years in 2017, but has since received constant updates, patches and DLC content. There is no news of ‘A Hat in Time 2’ yet, and there are rumors that developers Gears For Breakfast are currently focusing on a completely different title for now.
