Mario Castiglione Tragically Passed Away

Mario Castiglione died on May 21, 2000, at the age of 54. He was admitted to Rossi Hospital, fighting a long battle with colon cancer. He is laid to rest at La Plata Cemetery in La Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Born in 1946 in the town of Los Hornos in La Plata, Mario started studying acting at a young age at the Salesian school. He was under the tutelage of the renowned theatre actress, Alejandra Boero. In the late 1970s, he became part of the I Medici Concert group, which led to his introduction to national fame. Around that time, he also served as the director of the Independent Theater of La Plata. He was also a prominent member of the Provincial Comedy Theater and the General San Martín Municipal Theater.

He also briefly worked in films, appearing alongside stars like Alberto Olmedo, Jorge Porcel, Ricardo Bauleo, and Julio De Grazia, to name a few, in titles like ‘Little Rascals Have Fun’ and ‘Explosive Brigade.’ Still, his heart remained primarily with the theatre, where he delivered his best work. He was known in theatre circles as a highly underrated actor and a warm, welcoming person. None of the fame he had so far compared to the spotlight that turned towards him when he started dating Moria Casan, who had already established herself as one of the biggest stars in the country. When they met, she was already in a relationship, and he was married with two kids. Their feelings for one another eventually led them to break up with their respective partners.

Mario and Moria got together in the 1980s and enjoyed a more than a decade-long relationship. During this time, they had a daughter named Sofia in 1987. With Moria being a media favourite, the couple faced a lot of public scrutiny with a highly publicised relationship. Slowly, as their career diverged into completely different directions, the impact started to show on their marriage as well. At the same time, Mario also struggled with alcohol addiction, which eventually became a major cause for his separation with Moria. Despite the breakup, the couple remained cordial as they co-parented their daughter. While Moria took on new lovers, Mario too had a relationship which bore him another son, Raul.

In the late 90s, Mario’s career took a turn, especially after he was diagnosed with colon cancer. As his health deteriorated, he decided to withdraw from public life, also retiring from his artisitc pursuits to spend his remaining time with his friends and loved ones. Moria revealed in an interview that despite his health issues, he would come to her sets to watch her perform. She also credits him for giving her a loving daughter, admitting that she would probably not have had children if it weren’t for Mario. She and Sofia remember him fondly and celebrate his personal and professional legacy.
