Directed by Shukou Murase, ‘Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway is a mecha science fiction action-adventure anime film. It serves as a sequel to ‘Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack,’ depicting the events that take place 12 years after the conclusion of the Second Neo Zeon War or the eponymous Char’s rebellion. It is also the first entry in a planned trilogy based on the light novel series ‘Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway’s Flash.’ The story revolves around a grown-up Hathaway Noa, the son of Bright Noa. He still struggles to come to terms with Quess Paraya’s death.
Life seems to have taken him to a surprising path, as he has become the leader of an insurgent organization that has been waging war against the Earth Federation government. Following a chance encounter with the enemy captain Kenneth Sleg and a mysterious woman Gigi Andalucia, Hathaway’s life rapidly starts to spiral out of control. If you are curious about the ending of ‘Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway,’ here is what we know. SPOILERS ALERT.
Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway Plot Synopsis
The film begins in a space shuttle traveling to Earth and carrying several federal cabinet ministers. Suddenly, a group of terrorists boards the shuttle, and their leader claims himself to be Mafty, the infamous eco-terrorist who is regularly compared with Char Aznable, the erstwhile leader of the Neo Zeon movement. Working together, Hathaway and Kenneth take down the group, but there are some casualties. Gigi, who is also on the flight, claims that the terrorists are not the real Mafty, a conclusion with which Kenneth agrees, commenting that this group doesn’t have Mafty’s style and finesse.
Being forced to spend time in the tropical city of Davao, Hathaway draws the attention of both the military and the Bureau of Investigation. He also seems to interest Gigi, who correctly deduces that he is Mafty’s leader. He meets up with two members of his organization, Mihessia and Kenji, and instructs them to organize an attack on Davao to help him escape the city and the authorities’ surveillance. However, when the attack happens, the military responds quickly and effectively under Kenneth’s command. This leads to a massive battle with significant collateral damage. The mission fails as well, as Hathaway doesn’t escape and spends the duration of the battle protecting Gigi.
Hathaway discovers that the military now has a Gundam, RX-104FF Penelope, piloted by a youth named Lane Aim. Eventually, Hathaway manages to escape from the city and get to Mafty’s base of operations. However, Kenneth has figured out that Hathaway is involved with Mafty and finds the organization’s base by tracing Hathaway. The climactic fight takes place between Lane’s Penelope and Hathaway’ powerful Ξ Gundam or Xi Gundam, which he retrieves from space.
Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway Ending: How Does Hathaway Defeat Lane?
Realizing that he will not get much out of Gawman, the rebel that the military captured during the terrorist attack on Davao, Kenneth decides to place him in Penelope’s cockpit along with Lane and tells his subordinate to use the rebel as a hostage if necessary. Being young and inexperienced as he is, Lane initially believes that he will never need to do that. Hathaway appeals to the youth’s honor during their fight, and Lane acquiesces, letting the captive go.
Hathaway gets his comrade securely inside Ξ Gundam, and then the battle begins earnestly. Maneuvering through Penelope’s missiles, Hathaway takes Ξ Gundam close to the surface of the water and uses his Beam Rifle to draw Lane’s attention. As Lane focuses Penelope’s arsenal towards the rifle, Hathaway ambushes him with Funnel Missiles and defeats him. While Penelope takes considerable damage, Lane manages to make it out alive of the encounter.
What is the Significance of the Post-Credits Scene?
The post-credits scene is simply an image depicting the Australian city of Oenbelli. Throughout the film, bits and pieces of information have been revealed about what is happening in Oenbelli. As some people believe that Mafty’s base is located in Australia, they have begun to gather there, and this impromptu movement is now 20,000-member strong. The news of this seems to inspire Hathaway, making him realize Mafty’s actions are influencing people. In the film’s final scenes, he agrees to lead Mafty to Oenbelli to help the rebels against the forces of the Earth Federation government.
Who Is Mafty Navue Erin? What Are Mafty’s Objectives?
Mafty Navue Erin is an alias of Hathaway Noa. He uses this name to lead the most prominent insurgent movement against the Earth Federation government in U.C. 0105, the year in which the story is set. Mafty Navue Erin is a name that combines words from three different languages: Sudanese, Arabic, and Old Irish. It supposedly translates to “The Righteous King of Prophets.” While interrogating Gawman, Kenneth erroneously concludes that Hathaway is not the real leader of Mafty and that there is some shadowy individual pulling his strings.
The main objective of Mafty is to force humanity to leave Earth so that the environment will not sustain further damage. They also proclaim that their fight is against a deeply corrupt Earth Federation government. Its cynical policies have only worsened the pollution on the planet. It has introduced legislation that allows it to exile anyone it thinks is a potential threat. This has predictably made a significant portion of Earth’s population sympathetic to Mafty’s actions.
