5. Donnie Darko: Jake Gyllenhaal
Jake Gyllenhaal played the titular role of Donald ‘Donnie’ Darko in the 2001 Indie cult hit, Donnie Darko. Though, he made his acting debut in the lesser known 1991 drama, City Slickers, it was Donnie Darko, that paved the way for Jake Gyllenhaal’s stardom. He then went on to act in movies like Zodaic, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Nocturnal Animals which further increased his recognition.
4. Mio in the Land of Faraway: Christian Bale
Christian Bale’s started out his movie career as a child actor in two films that released in the same year: Mio in the Land of Faraway and Empire of the Sun. While the former didn’t garner much acclaim, the latter put Bale on the road to stardom. Bale’s breakthrough role as an adult came when he starred as Patrick Bateman in American Psycho. He became a global star after his portrayal of Batman in Christopher Nolan’s Batman Triology.
3. A Nightmare on the Elm Street: Johnny Depp
The 1984 slasher film, A Nightmare on Elm Street is a cult-classic. And it featured the acting debut of Johnny Depp, one of world’s biggest movie stars. Johnny Depp played the role of Glen Lantz, the boyfriend of the heroine Nancy Thompson (played by Heather Lagenkamp). It was the role of Jack Sparrow in The Pirates of the Caribbean series that made Johnny Depp a worldwide phenomenon. He is also popular for portraying “larger than life” roles which he can pull off with an impeccable ease.
2. Critters 3: Leonardo Di Caprio
The biggest name in Hollywood today is undoubtedly Leonardo Di Caprio. Before Hollywood could know him through Romeo and Juliet, and Titanic, Di Caprio appeared in the 1991 horror movie, Critters 3. He played the character of Josh, stepson of a corrupt landlord, who gets killed after Josh locks him in a room with those mysterious creatures. The movie was panned critically, but, Leo went on to become one of the biggest movie stars in the world today.

Before Nicole Kidman became famous in Hollywood, she acted in Australian film industry for a few years. The road was much tougher for Naomi Watts who had to struggle for a decade in Hollywood before she landed a role in David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive. By then, Nicole was at the height of superstardom. Ultimately Naomi caught up with Nicole, and interestingly, the two still remain best friends.
