4. It
Horror movies are the most difficult genre to successfully pull off. The reason is simple. By now, all the tricks of the trade are out. How to manufacture scares is no longer as simple as it used to be 20 years back. ‘It’ is a decent horror film. It is just not the best horror of this decade as many have proclaimed it to be.
3. Thor: Ragnarok
I can’t fathom all the praise the film received. 92% Rotten Tomatoes rating for a film that’s full of cheesy dialogues is mind-boggling. Probably, I saw a different film than everyone else.
2. First They Killed My Father
I am not sure whether Angelina Jolie makes movies for art sake or to drive her humanitarian beliefs. While there is nothing wrong in using film as medium to show the pain of people, one can only watch that so many number of times. ‘First They Killed My Father’ is not a bad film. It is just not a film that knows how to tell an engaging or affecting story. Jolie should have rather made a documentary on the subject.
1. Get Out
Without doubt, the most overrated film of the year. Is it a good film? Yes. Is it relevant to the times we live in? Yes. Is it successful in commenting on race relations in America? Yes. So, what’s exactly the problem? Again, I will go back to my definition of “overrated”. ‘Get Out’ is a solid film; it is not as great a film as the countless awards bestowed on it might have led you to believe.
