14 Most Overrated South Indian Directors Working Today

5. Venkat Prabhu

The Party-man of South Indian Cinema, Venkat Prabhu is known for his uber-cool movies. All his movies are comedies that revolve the existing party culture. Barring Mankatha, Venkat Prabhu’s movies are all slapstick comedies that contain huge doses of ‘masala’ tainted with comedy. Venkat Prabhu should come out of his ‘party’ hangover and satisfy his hard core fans.

4. K.S. Ravi Kumar

K.S. Ravi Kumar is the most dependable Tamil Director of this era. All his movies are loved by masses and family audiences. He is rather popular to make films with this trademark formula: Huge doses of action, some comedy, thrilling screenplay, everything wrapped in a melodrama of family sentiments. K.S. Ravi Kumar’s debut was a sensational thriller: Puriyaadha Puthir. He is a talent to reckon with, if he tries amend his formula and stop making movies for superstars. His recent outing, Lingaa failed to match the expectations and was a disappointing fare.

3. Shankar

Shankar is the biggest filmmaker in India today. His next movie needs no introduction. Single-handedly, he did put Tamil Cinema on the global map. All his movies were ahead of its times, with never-seen-before graphics. The only complaint of the ace-director is that he never experiments with genres. All his movies are either social dramas or Sci-fi movies. Despite being the biggest Indian director, he has never churned an art film.

2. Bala

Bala is a cult-director who enjoys humongous following among Tamil Cinema. There is no denying the fact that, Bala’s movies were much ahead of its time. At the beginning of his career, he was able to churn out cult-classics like Pithamagam, Naan Kadavul. As a matter of fact, he has stuck to the genre-black comedy, all during his extraordinary filming career. His recent outing, Tharai Thapattai failed to pull audiences to the theater. If he continues to tread the same road, then all his legend would be forgotten.

1. Ram Gopal Varma

Years ago, the name of Ram Gopal Varma would have movie-lovers flocking the theaters. His track record is made up of many path-breaking movies that changed the course of Indian Cinema. There is no doubt in denying the fact that RGV brought the Hollywood-ized touch to Indian Cinema. But, he has lost all his splendor. All we hear of him these days are his meaningless tweets.
