Before Charles Manson came to be known as the man and killer that he is today, he led a semblance of a normal life. After his release from prison in the mid-1950s, he met and married Rosalie Willis, his first wife. The two even had a son together, but another incarceration got in the way, and the two ended up going their separate ways. Netflix’s ‘Conversations with a Killer: The Charles Manson Tapes’ sheds light on this lesser-known aspect of his life and gives a little insight into Rosalie as well.
Rosalie Willis Was Expecting a Child With Charles Manson When He Was Arrested in 1956
Rosalie Jean Willis was born on January 28, 1937, in Marshall County, West Virginia. Her father, Clarence Basil Willis, was a coal miner, while her mother, Virginia M. Thompson, is believed to have been a homemaker. Willis was quite young when her parents separated, and she moved with her siblings, Eileen, Amy, Rosalie and Clarence, to Benwood, West Virginia. She finished her schooling there and even worked as a waitress in a hospital for a while. Some reports suggest that when Charles Manson moved to the city with his mother, Kathleen Maddox, he befriended Willis’ father, and that is how the two of them met for the first time.
Willis is believed to have known about Manson’s petty crimes, for which he had been incarcerated as well by then. However, she had faith in his rehabilitation and got married to him at a Nazarene church on January 7, 1955. Willis was three months pregnant when she and Manson moved to Los Angeles, California, and started their life together. He has described it as a good and peaceful time in his life and called Willis a “super girl.” However, before their son was born, Manson was arrested for driving a stolen car across state lines. He was sentenced to jail after he failed to appear on a court date in March 1956. Willis gave birth to their son, Charles Manson Jr., on April 10, 1956. In the first few months, she even took her son to meet his father in prison, but the arrangement did not last long. In 1958, she divorced him.
Rosalie Willis Saw the Passing of Her Three Sons in Her Lifetime
In 1958, Rosalie Willis got married to Jack White, and the two of them welcomed two more sons, Jed and Jesse White, together. Even Charles Manson Jr. took his stepfather’s name and became known as Jay White to keep himself distanced from his biological father’s image. In 1965, Willis and White got divorced, and she married for a third time to Warren Howard Handley. She faced many ordeals in her life. In 1971, one of her younger sons, Jed White, passed away from an accidental gunshot wound. Her other son, Jesse J. White, died of a drug overdose in Houston, Texas, in August 1986. Her firstborn, Jay White, died by suicide on June 29, 1993, on a stretch of I-70 near Burlington, Colorado, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Her third husband also passed away in November 1998. Willis is believed to have spent the last few years of her life in Tucson, Arizona. She died on August 21, 2009, of lung cancer in the city and was buried at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial, Boulder City, Nevada.
