Russell “Rusty” Yates was in his office when his children, 7-year-old Noah Jacob Yates, 5-year-old John Samuel Yates, 3-year-old Paul Abraham Yates, 2-year-old Luke David Yates, and 6-month-old Mary Deborah Yates, were found dead inside the family home. His wife, Andrea Pia Yates, had confessed to the investigators that she had drowned her children in the bathtub. The episode also features an in-depth interview with Rusty, discussing the events leading up to the day of the tragedy.
Rusty Yates Sought Medical Help When Andrea Yates Struggled With Mental Health
When Russell Yates, also known as Rusty, first met Andrea Pia Yates, he thought he had found his soulmate. It did not take them long to develop a close bond, and they soon moved in together. In April 1993, they took the next step in their relationship by tying the knot at a beautiful venue, surrounded by their loved ones. Their lives were soon filled with joy when they welcomed their son, Noah Jacob Yates, on February 26, 1994. That same year, Rusty accepted a job in Florida, leading the family to relocate to Seminole.

On December 15, 1995, Rusty and Andrea gave birth to their son, John Samuel Yates. Their third son, Paul Abraham Yates, was born on September 13, 1997. Around that same time, the family once again moved back to Houston, Texas, where the household was filled with happiness with the arrival of their son, Luke David Yates, on February 15, 1999. However, things took a turn when Rusty noticed that Andrea had suddenly grown distant, according to his statements in the show. Following that, she had tried to die by suicide and was admitted into the hospital, where she was diagnosed with postpartum depression.
Reports state that although Andrea was discharged from the hospital, she once again had to be hospitalized due to her mental health struggles. Rusty stated on the show that when she was discharged the second time, she was prescribed medications. Rusty stated that the doctors had suggested that he and Andrea should not have any more children. According to court records, she had gradually appeared to be doing better. Ultimately, they welcomed their daughter, Mary Deborah Yates, on November 30, 2000. Further reports suggest that she once again began struggling with her postpartum mental health, and she was placed under the care of a psychiatrist.
Rusty Yates Continues to Remain in Contact With Andrea After the Tragedy
Rusty still remembered the day of June 20, 2001, when he left home for work around 9 am and saw Andrea eating cereal. Around an hour later, he received a call from his wife asking him to come home. While speaking about the moment, he recalled feeling that something had gone wrong. When he arrived home, he was shocked to find police cars parked outside. It wasn’t long before he learned that Andrea had confessed to drowning Paul, Mary, Luke, Noah, and John in the bathtub. On that same day, she was arrested and charged with multiple counts of capital murder.

Andrea’s first jury trial began in February 2002, during which she was convicted on two counts of capital murder and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 40 years. However, her convictions were overturned in January 2005, and the court ordered a new trial. Her second trial commenced in June 2006. During the trial, the defense claimed that the defendant followed the religious teachings of a man named Michael Woroniecki, and it might have influenced her actions. Ultimately, Andrea was found not guilty by reason of insanity the following month.
Since the verdict, Rusty has continued to visit Andrea at the hospital at least once a year. He also shared that he occasionally speaks with her over the phone. While speaking on the matter, he stated, “Andrea and I always got along. That’s a time of our life that we both cherish, and she’s the only person I can talk to about it.” On the show, he also said he didn’t feel Michael’s teachings had influenced Andrea. According to him, her struggles with mental health ultimately led to the heartbreaking tragedy.
Rusty Yates is Thriving in His Career at NASA and Finds Joy in His Family
Before the ordeal completely changed his life, Rusty was focused on building a unique career path. Upon graduating from high school, he went on to pursue a Bachelor of Applied Science in Mathematics at Auburn University in 1982. After earning his degree in 1987, he enrolled in the University of Houston Law Center in 2009. Four years later, he completed a Doctor of Laws in Health Law. Rusty began his professional trajectory in January 2001 as a Project Manager of the Orbiter Project Office at NASA’s Johnson Space Center. He held the position until October 2011, when his dedication earned him a promotion to Senior Systems Engineer in the organization’s Engineering Directorate.

After the profound loss of his children, Rusty launched a memorial website, YATESKIDS, to keep their memories alive. In his personal life, he made a significant decision when he filed for divorce from Andrea in August 2004, and the divorce was finalized in March 2005. Fortunately, Rusty found love once again when he crossed paths with Laura Arnold at the Clear Lake Church of Christ. As their casual conversations grew deeper, they finally got married in a private ceremony at the same church. The pair was overcome with joy when they welcomed their son into the world. As of writing, Rusty continues to work as a Senior Systems Engineer at NASA and seems to be leading a quiet life away from the limelight, with his family by his side.
