The initial missing person’s investigation took a dark turn when her remains were discovered nearly three months after she went missing. Eventually, the investigation revealed that her former partner, Shawn M. Doyle, was responsible for her death. The episode also explores the impact the tragedy left on her loved ones through detailed interviews with her sister, nephew, and two sons.
Shawn Doyle’s Troubled Past Came to Light After Lori Leonard’s Disappearance
Shawn M. Doyle was born on January 12, 1976, and grew up in Hudson Falls, New York. He eventually attended a high school in that same area. When he was just 16 years old, he crossed paths with Ceres “C.C.” Opanowski, and shortly after, they began dating. According to Ceres’ statements on the show, during his junior year, he told her that his parents had allegedly kicked him out of their home. Shortly after, he moved into her parents’ home, and by his senior year, he dropped out of high school. Around the same time, he began working several jobs. In September 1995, Shawn and Ceres parted ways, but things took a turn on January 27, 1996, when Shawn attacked her inside her home.
Shawn was arrested and charged with harassment, menacing, and trespassing. He ultimately pleaded guilty to menacing and was sentenced to probation for 3 years. Five years later, he once again had a run-in with the law when he allegedly tried to kill his then 23-year-old partner, Sarah Volmar. Following that, he was taken into custody and faced the charges of second-degree unlawful imprisonment and third-degree assault. Shawn then pleaded guilty to unlawful imprisonment and received 3 years of probation. In 2003, he met a young mother of two, Lori Ann Leonard, on a dating website, and soon their relationship blossomed. However, their bond didn’t work out, leading them to break up.
Despite their separation, Lori and Shawn agreed to remain friends and stayed in contact with each other. On April 29, 2005, when she shifted from her old apartment in Chittenango to a new rental apartment, he reportedly helped her with the move. According to Lori’s sister, Jennifer Leonard, Shawn then stayed at Lori’s new place for a few days before returning to Hudson Falls on May 4, 2005. On that same day, the 33-year-old suddenly disappeared after leaving for Albany to pick up Yankees tickets from an acquaintance. Jennifer reported her sister missing on May 5, which quickly brought Shawn under investigators’ scrutiny.
Shawn Was Arrested After Physical Evidence Connected Him to the Murder
According to official records, when Shawn was questioned, he claimed that he left Lori’s home around 3 pm on May 4 and drove 3 hours to return home. Upon checking her cellphone records, authorities grew suspicious since Shawn had not called the 33-year-old even once to check on her after she went missing. When his vehicle’s glove compartment was searched, they uncovered a key with a particular serial number inside. A breakthrough came on July 24, 2005, when Lori’s remains were discovered inside a toolbox in the Champlain Canal. Her arms and feet were bound with duct tape, and she was also handcuffed.
Furthermore, Lori had a bandana tied around her mouth. Officials also discovered sand tubes inside the toolbox. Following that, they executed a search warrant at Shawn’s home in Hudson Falls. Reports indicate that during the search, they uncovered handcuffs, duct tape, bandanas, and sand tubes, similar to those found inside the toolbox. Moreover, the key found in his automobile was also determined to match the toolbox’s lock. On July 25, 2005, Shawn was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder.
Shawn is Currently Incarcerated at a New York Prison Facility Today
On January 23, 2006, Shawn’s jury trial finally began, during which the prosecution presented several pieces of physical evidence. They also introduced several witnesses, including a clerk at a local AutoZone store. The clerk testified that she had sold the toolbox to the defendant a week before Lori went missing. One of Shawn’s friends, Dorothy Tucker, testified that on the day the 33-year-old disappeared, he had visited Dorothy’s home. During the meeting, his friend noticed a big cardboard box in the back of his truck. She further testified that he was not wearing a bandana, which was unusual since he always wore one.
In her testimony, Dorothy said that a few days later, she noticed that instead of the cardboard box, he had a large toolbox at the back of his truck. The prosecution also highlighted his past criminal record through additional testimony from Ceres. On the other hand, the defense questioned the credibility of the prosecution’s case. They claimed that the store clerk’s identification of Doyle was unreliable. On January 26, 2006, the jury found him guilty of second-degree murder. He was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison, which is the maximum sentence available for the conviction.
Shawn subsequently appealed his conviction on several grounds, claiming there was insufficient evidence to support the verdict and that the jury’s verdict was against the weight of the evidence. He also challenged the judge’s decision to admit evidence of his prior attacks and the validity of the search warrant executed at his residence. On February 28, 2008, the Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court affirmed the judgment. As of writing, Shawn is serving his sentence at the NYSDOC Eastern Correctional Facility in Napanoch, New York. His parole hearing is set for March 2030, while his parole eligibility and the earliest release date are scheduled for July 21, 2030.
