The Cinemaholic Bollywood Awards 2017

The Musical Awards

BEST CHOREOGRAPHY

The nominees are:

Bosco-Ceasar – ‘Tamma Tamma Again’ (Badrinath Ki Dulhania)

Ganesh Acharya – ‘Chalti Hai Kya 9 se 12’ (Judwaa 2)

Shiamak Davar – ‘Ullu Ka Pattha’ (Jagga Jasoos)

Sudesh Adhana – ‘Bloody Hell’ (Rangoon)

Vijay Ganguly – ‘Galti Se Mistake’ (Jagga Jasoos)

And the winner is: SHIAMAK DAVAR – ‘ULLU KA PATTHA’ (JAGGA JASOOS)

Both the nominated songs in ‘Jagga Jasoos’ edge out the competitors for their unusual, quirky choreography. But ‘Ullu Ka Pattha’ emerges as the clear winner as it has so much more quirk while reducing the dancers to two! Ranbir-Katrina have always had an endearing chemistry and it shines through in this fun tune.

BEST PLAYBACK SINGER – FEMALE

The nominees are:

Harshdeep Kaur – ‘Zaalima’ (Raees)

Jasleen Royal – ‘Din Shagna Da’ (Phillauri)

Meghna Mishra – ‘Main Kaun Hoon’ (Secret Superstar)

Nikhita Gandhi – ‘Raabta’ (Raabta)

Shashaa Tirupati – ‘Kanha’ (Shubh Mangal Savdhaan)

And the winner is: SHASHAA TIRUPATI – ‘KANHA’ (SHUBH MANGAL SAVDHAAN)

‘Shubh Mangal Savdhaan’ has a mellow, understated soundtrack suitable to the film’s tone, and ‘Kanha’ is a highlight of it. Newbie Shashaa Tripathi has no trouble coursing through the octaves in a track replete with classical influences. How this track didn’t grab the top of the charts is a mystery to me.

BEST PLAYBACK SINGER – MALE

The nominees are:

Akhil Sachdeva – ‘Humsafar’ (Badrinath Ki Dulhania)

Arijit Singh – ‘Haareya’ (Meri Pyaari Bindu)

Arijit Singh – ‘Hawayein’ (Jab Harry Met Sejal)

Atif Aslam – ‘Mai Agar’ (Tubelight)

Diljit Dosnajh – ‘Dum Dum’ (Phillauri)

And the winner is: ARIJIT SNGH ‘HAWAYEIN’ (JAB HARRY MET SEJAL)

While Imtiaz Ali’s latest European adventure failed spectacularly on the ‘acting’ and ‘storyline’ fronts, the JHMS soundtrack was one of the best this year. And the most memorable song from the album is the soulful ‘Hawayein’, thanks to the stellar vocals of Arijit Singh.

BEST LYRICS

The nominees are:

Amitabh Bhattacharya – ‘Ullu Ka Pattha’ (Jagga Jasoos)

Amitabh Bhattacharya – ‘Nazm Nazm’ (Bareily Ki Barfi)

Irshad Kamil – ‘Hawayein’ (Jab Harry Met Sejal)

Kausar Munir – ‘Maana Ke Hum Yaar Nahin’ (Meri Pyaari Bindu)

Raj Shekhar – ‘Jaane De’ (Qarib Qarib Single)

And the winner is: KAUSAR MUNIR – ‘MAANA KE HUM YAR NAHIN’ (MERI PYAARI BINDU)

While this year was a witness to some heart-rending, poetic lyrics accompanying its music, this graceful track, which urges a lost lover to keep being a friend, is surely the most touching of them all. Different singers have adorned it in various versions, but Kausar Munir’s words end up urging the listener to put the tune on repeat.

SONG OF THE YEAR

The nominees are:

‘Hawayein’ (Jab Harry Met Sejal)

‘Humsafar’ (Badrinath Ki Dulhania)

‘Maana Ke Hum Yaar Nahin’ (Meri Pyaari Bindu)

‘Ullu Ka Pattha’ (Jagga Jasoos)

‘Zaalima’ (Raees)

And the winner is: ‘HAWAYEIN’ (JAB HARRY MET SEJAL)

This was one of the toughest categories to choose from, as all these five songs have made a home inside our hearts, but the crown has to go to ‘Hawayein’ for its breathtaking cinematography, Arijit’s flawless vocals and SRK-Anushka’s ever-so-reliable charm, which while waned during the film, shines during its musical moments.

ALBUM OF THE YEAR

The nominees are:

Amaal Malik, Tanishk Bagchi – ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’

Amit Trivedi – ‘Secret Superstar’

Jasleen Royal, Shashwat Sachdev – ‘Phillauri’

Pritam Chakraborty – ‘Jagga Jasoos’

Pritam Chakraborty, Diplo – ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’

And the winner is: PRITAM CHAKRABORTY – ‘JAGGA JASOOS’

Well, this was an obvious choice. Though Bollywood is notorious for the use of music in its films, rarely do we weave music into our plots better than ‘Jagga Jasoos’ does. The film has 29 songs/musical interludes, only two of which truly halt the narrative. And even by quintessential Bollywood soundtrack standards, ‘Jagga’ packs an all-round punch, with foot-tapping chartbusters and mellow ballads in equal measure.
