Road trip movies are thoroughly entertaining and have proven to be apt premises for movies appealing to a diverse set of audiences, be it adults or the complete family. They feature the most adequate concept for exploring varying characters and the template is extremely suitable for easily weaving in a tale of resolving-the-differences. Sony Pictures Animation’s ‘The Mitchells vs. The Machines’ combines the road trip premise with the genre of science fiction.

To be more specific, it combines the tech uprising concept with that of the road trip and the dysfunctional family. The fact that it is meant to be an animated movie suitable for all ages only serves to enhance its appeal. Just think of the 2006 film, ‘Little Miss Sunshine.’ The live-action movie about a family traveling across the country was lauded for its hilariously heart-touching story. Now combine that with a robot uprising and picturesque animation. Voila! You now have the recipe for a promising animated flick.

However, their plans of a life-changing family experience are foiled when the uprising of technology threatens apocalypse and the destruction of humankind. They face a deadly situation where their phones, self-driving cars and all other forms of technology begin to develop their own conscience and turn against their very own creators: mankind.

The story is set in a near-future fictional world where advanced, personal robots have become commonplace. However, the tech uprising makes these robots deadly predators. Luckily for the Mitchells, they have the assistance of a couple of malfunctioning robots that do not turn against them. However, the family will still need to resolve their personal differences with each other and work as a united team to survive and possibly save the planet.
