The Promised Neverland S02: Everything We Know

‘The Promised Neverland’ was one of the most promising anime shows of 2019. Animated by CloverWorks (‘Persona 5‘, ‘Darling in the FranXX‘), the anime brings in some complex psychological warfare that slowly grows on you and makes you fall in love with it over time. Throughout its runtime, it keeps its elements of mystery intact while maintaining a steady pace.

Even from an artistic standpoint, although I wouldn’t say that it’s among the best, ColverWorks Studio has clearly outdone itself here. If you haven’t watched the first season of ‘The Promised Neverland’, now would be the perfect time to check it out. And for those who have already seen its first season, read on further to know its next season.

The Promised Neverland Season 2 Release Date: When will it premiere?

‘The Promised Neverland’ season 1 premiered on January 10, 2019, and with a total of 12 episodes, it finished airing on March 29, 2019. Although there were no official announcements after its release, most anime fans were certain that the anime would later return with a whole new season. Considering the fact that the first season ends with a major cliffhangerit comes as no surprise that its second season has been confirmed. ‘The Promised Neverland’ Season 2, which was previously scheduled to release in October 2020, has now been delayed to January 2021 due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

The expectations from the anime are extremely high and in Anime Expo 2019, director Mamoru Kanbe (‘Baccano‘, ‘Elfen Lied‘) also claimed that creating the second season is going to be quite challenging but he’s doing his best to make sure that the anime lives up to everyone’s expectations. Kenta Suzuki (‘ERASED‘, ‘Code Geass‘), the producer of ‘The Promised Neverland’ added to this by saying: “Our first season was definitely centered around our main characters escaping. Now, for the next series, we do want to focus on ‘Is Emma going to be able to keep that promise she made'”

A teaser visual was also recently released on twitter which portrays one of the most influential scenes of the first season. You can check it out below:

The Promised Neverland Season 2 Plot: What can it be about?

The first season of ‘The Promised Neverland’ has more of a psychological thriller appeal to it but from what we know about the second season, it will further delve deeper into its horror themes. The first season left us with a whole lot of riddles surrounding the characters and the overarching plot of the anime, so there are many possible directions in which the anime can head in.

However, out of all the mysteries of the first season of the anime, one that most fans would be curious about is: What truly lies behind the closed walls of their orphanage? The closing scene of the first season shows the orphanage getting walled off, but the group of orphans seems to be unaware of the world that surrounded them all this while.

Apart from that, it is pretty obvious that the kids will now try to look for William Minerva, whose books aided them with their escape. And while they’re at it, demons will try to hunt them down. Speaking of the demons, it is still unclear who these creatures are, where they’ve come from, or what their true intentions are. Apart from this, there are also many questions surrounding the characters.

In the first season, Norman ends up sacrificing himself for the group, but it is never revealed if he actually dies or not. And of course, when it comes to Emma, will she be able to keep her promise? Will she ever be able to return to the orphanage to save the other younger orphans? We sure do have a lot to look forward to, so let’s just hope that it will be as good as it promises to be.
