‘To the Max’ charts an adrenaline-fuelled story about a group of friends who share an indomitable passion for BASE jumping, a kind of extreme sport involving jumping from high altitudes. Carlos and his friends, Armando, Chana, Dario, and Alvaro, are always looking for new expeditions to pursue and new heights to conquer. Therefore, they’re intrigued by biologist and fellow climber Myriam Montañana’s proposition of undertaking a mission to Trango Tower and executing a jump that would add their names to a world record. However, the climbers soon learn that training and acquiring funding for this endeavor is hardly the most difficult part of the quest. In the months that follow, the group takes numerous hits, most of them fatal, which challenge their resolve and spirit. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Chana, a spirited mountain climber and BASE jumper, is the glue that holds his group of fellow adrenaline junkies together. It’s his influence that compels his friends, including Carlos, Armando, Alvaro, and Dario, among others, to try out wingsuit flying. Shortly thereafter, Carlos, who has managed to make a living out of his hobby, never needing to clock in to a 9-to-5, crosses paths with Myriam Montañana at one of his lectures. The latter has a clear interest in his work and is looking to recruit skilled climbers in pursuit of a record-breaking expedition to Pakistan’s Mount Nameless. She already has funding tentatively secured through a producer friend who is interested in documenting the climb and the ensuing jump for filmmaking purposes.

Despite Carlos and his friends’ expertise, the venture remains substantially dangerous. Yet, the prospect of feat invites their shared intrigue and interest. In fact, Dario suggests employing the wingsuits for the jump in order to raise the stakes. This means they have to do further training in their routine to prepare for the trip. However, things come to a chilling halt when Chana dies following a crash during one of his wingsuit flying exhibition events. Even though his friends are deeply shaken by the tragedy, they conclude that their fallen adventurer would want them to continue chasing thrills and remain steadfast on their Mount Nameless quest. Yet, when the producers pull out of the project entirely, extracting the funding in the process, it begins to seem as though the decision to continue might not be in their hands. Nonetheless, Carlos refuses to accept the same and decides to look for ways to secure outsider funding himself.

In the meantime, Armando goes on a dangerous jump with Alvaro, which involves wingsuit flying through a crack in a narrow canyon. The duo has such a thrilling experience that they decide to extend their stay to repeat the jump the next morning. Unfortunately, this time, luck proves not to be in Alvaro’s favor as the wind carries him off toward the canyon, leading to a grotesque crash into the rocks. In light of another loss, Armando has to take a momentary break from his extreme sport hobbies. Misfortune continues to loom over the group of thrill seekers as Carlos sustains an injury himself during a relatively safer outing with Dario and Myriam. Although the fall only causes a broken septum and a concussion, it has a lasting impact on Dario. Shortly afterward, they receive some disappointing news when they learn that a Russian jumper has broken the record they had been hoping to break with their Nameless jump.

Nonetheless, Dario refuses to let the development break his spirit, insisting that regardless of any records, their expedition sustains a sense of value. In fact, he’s ready to pocket part of the funding himself. Around the same time, Carlos secretly signs up for a desk job, much to his partner’s chagrin. However, when Myriam reveals that she has managed to secure a bank loan for the trip, more than enough to cover the cost of the trip, a heavy argument breaks out between the couple. Even so, despite internal frictions, the team finally finds itself at a secure place in its quest to conquer Mount Nameless. That is, until another mishap changes the BASE jumpers’ fate. A few months before their planned expedition, Dario and Armando perform a proximity flying exhibition. As the latter makes the last-minute decision to increase his jump’s altitude, it ends up spelling out his doom. Thus, after starting out as a group of five, Armando and Carlos find themselves as the last two left behind.

The journey to undertaking the Mount Nameless expedition remains one filled with hurdles and many obstacles. When Myriam first introduces the proposition to Carlos and his friends, she comes with the security of funding. As such, the only thing standing in the way of the group seems to be the training required to confront the daunting challenge. Their own inclusion of wingsuit flying for the drop adds more complications and subsequently training to the mix. Yet, the venture itself remains doable. The real reason their trip ends up getting perpetually postponed is that Myriam’s investors eventually pull out of the endeavor. They begin to second-guess Carlos and his friends’ ability to captivate and attract an audience, considering none of them even shares their adventures online.

Although this doesn’t dampen Carlos and his friends’ desire to undertake the expedition, it introduces a long stretch of downtime. By some twist of fate, in the matter of these months, the group suffers a series of tragedies as three members end up being involved in fatal accidents, all involving their BASE jumping endeavors. Naturally, the devastation of these losses piles up, casting a heavy weight on Carlos and Armando, the only surviving individuals of their friend group. Even so, despite everything, the former refuses to take these tragedies as cautionary tales. Carlos firmly believes that in matters of mortality, everyone has their turn. Therefore, he believes fighting the inevitability of one’s demise is futile. Instead, he wants to cherish the time he has been given by chasing after his idea of contentment and peace.

In Carlos’ eyes, his friends’ deaths are the perfect example of the same. Chana, Alvaro, and Dario all loved the thrill of the jump and spent their entire life chasing after it. For them, these ventures of extreme sport were a way of connecting with the world around them, respecting the precious value of life, and enjoying it to the fullest. Thus, he believes that despite everything, his friends would have never regretted the decisions that led to their demises. For the same reason, he refuses to let fear of the inevitable dominate the decisions he makes in his life. In the end, Carlos and Myriam make the trip to Mount Nameless and reach the summit of the Trango Tower. At more than 19 thousand feet altitude, he makes the BASE jump and dedicates it to his dear friend Dario. The jumper survives this impressive feat and goes on to live his life to the fullest until he finally meets his own turn.

Does Armando Return to Skydiving? Does He Quit Wingflying?

Dario’s death takes a unique toll on Armando, who had been right beside his friend in the air on the day of his accident. For the exhibition, the duo performed a proximity-flying stunt, which involves a high altitude leap and a near-graze with a building before landing in a clearing. Shortly before they’re meant to undertake the flight, Dario becomes struck with inspiration to take things to the next level by increasing the altitude on his jump. Naturally, his friends are vehemently opposed to this added risk, especially given its last-minute nature. Even so, once in the air, the BASE jumper decides to follow his heart. Tragically, the higher altitude messes up the trajectory of the descent and leads to a devastating and fatal crash.

Armando only realizes what has happened once he lands on the ground. Given his close proximity to the accident, his family becomes increasingly concerned about his safety if he continues to pursue such dangerous endeavors. The friction between his hobby and his family’s anxiety over the dangers attached to it has long been a source of contention in the jumper’s life. His wife, a fellow climber, remains perpetually worried about losing her husband, which feeds her fear of starting a family with him. Similarly, his mother remains scared of losing him to an accident. As such, in the aftermath of Dario’s death, she asks her son to give up on these dangerous undertakings.

While Armando understands the apprehensions of his loved ones, he also knows he would never be truly content if he surrendered this intrinsic part of himself. However, the recent uptick in losses has also opened his eyes up to the tangible dangers of BASE jumping. Each accident and ensuing death turns statistics, which were once far-off, into an inescapable reality. Consequently, after Dario’s death, Armando realizes that he would rather not seek out such blatant danger. Thus, in an attempt at self-preservation, he agrees to give up on close-proximity jumps. Even though he decides to continue wingsuit flying, he bails on the trip to Mount Nameless. Instead, he stays back home with his family, helping with the renovation of his father’s restaurant, which eventually goes on to receive a Michelin star of its own.

Do Carlos and Myriam Break Up? Do They Get Back Together?

Carlos and Myriam’s relationship develops at a natural and expected pace. Initially, their involvement with each other remains purely professional as they train for the Mount Nameless climb. However, their interest in one another remains evident from day one, and it isn’t long before their connection turns deeper. Nonetheless, once they begin dating, they’re met with a unique set of challenges. Even though Myriam understands Carlos’ thrill-chasing lifestyle, she isn’t unaffected by its impact on her life.

As a BASE jumper, Myriam’s boyfriend puts his life at risk with every adventure. This means the biologist is forced to live in perpetual worry over possibly losing her partner to one wrong accident. As a result, Myriam tries to deal with it by forming an intense sense of individuality and independence. Even when she moves in with Carlos, she holds on to her own condo as a failsafe to fall back on. Furthermore, she insists that the two of them should continue living their lives on their timelines without trying to blend their futures together. This creates a sense of distance between the couple.

Thus, it’s only a matter of time before things bubble over and the two end up in a scathing fight over the upcoming trip’s funding. At first, this sends the duo down on their own paths for a while. However, life and its tumultuous journey inevitably bring them back together. In the wake of Dario’s tragic death, Myriam is there for Carlos as a close friend and confidant. Afterward, as the BASE jumper goes on his trip to Pakistan to climb and jump off of Mount Nameless, Myriam joins him on the endeavor. As the film ends, the nature of the duo’s relationship is left ambiguous. Yet, one thing is evident: the two may have their misunderstandings over the details of sharing a life together; however, they understand each other deeply and will continue to remain significant parts of each other’s lives.
