For its 30th anniversary, the makers of ‘Mario Puzo’s The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone’ (or as most people know it, ‘The Godfather Part III’) have released a new, edited version of it. Director Francis Ford Coppola (who is famous for re-releasing edited versions of his films) has tinkered a bit with the movie best known for being “not as great as the first two” and come out with a version that’s admittedly better than the original. Specifically, the opening and the ending has been changed and that makes a whole lot of difference. Of course, it is still not as good as the first two films (that’s a given), but it certainly is more watchable than before. And this time, ‘The Godfather, Coda’ manages to hint at the larger-than-life grandeur of ‘The Godfather I’ and ‘The Godfather II‘. Fast approaching the age of 60, Michael Corleone is repentant about his ruthless rise to power and is especially wracked with guilt over his brother Fredo’s murder, which he had ordered himself. Michael is hoping to legitimize his criminal empire so that his children will not become embroiled in organized crime and are able to lead a life of normalcy and respectability. Michael is ready to hang up his mob boss hat but the Mafia is not letting him go that easily.
