Where Was The Lodge Shot?

Fans of horror movies will know that a good horror film is like finding a needle in a haystack; you will have to sift through a lot of bad ones before you finally find one that lives up to the genre. Austrian filmmaker and horror movie specialist Veronika Franz’s first English language movie titled ‘The Lodge’ certainly belongs in the latter camp, garnering no small amount of plaudits and critical acclaim despite working with a limited budget. In many ways, that has worked to the film’s favor as it builds up a slow burn and manages to thoroughly unsettle the audience on a subconscious level without resorting to cheap jump scares and run down horror movie tropes.

The story line of ‘The Lodge’ largely takes place, quite predictably, inside a lodge and stars actress Riley Keough (fun fact – Riley Keogh is the eldest grandchild of the “King of Rock and Roll” himself, Elvis Presley) as Grace Marshall, a new stepmother secluded with her inhibited stepchildren Aidan and Mia (played by Jaeden Martell and Lia McHugh respectively). As the isolation sets in, memories of Grace’s dark past start creeping up once again and threaten to summon the psychological demons of her strict religious upbringing.

The Lodge Filming Locations

The story line of ‘The Lodge’ takes place in a snowed in lodge at a remote holiday village in an unspecified location. As such, this is a very familiar but effective setting for a horror movie and allows for filming to be wrapped up quicker. This is also the case with ‘The Lodge’, which managed to wrap up principal photography in less than a month in March of 2018.

Given the premise of the movie, you may be forgiven for thinking that ‘The Lodge’ could have been filmed anywhere. However, the actual filming location for the movie is the mosaic of colors that is the city of Montreal, Quebec. Given that an unholy amount of snow is basically a requirement for filming as per the premise of the movie, the filmmakers couldn’t have chosen a much better location to shoot than Quebec.

Montreal, Quebec, Canada

The entirety of the filming for ‘The Lodge’ took place in Montreal, Quebec in Canada during the March of 2018. This was the ideal month to film in the area owing to the natural abundance of snow during this period of the year.
