Where Was We Need to Talk About Kevin Filmed?

Some films only strive to tell a story, while some try to create an ambiance in the mind of the audience. ‘We Need to Talk About Kevin’ arguably belongs to the second kind. In this psychological thriller, Scottish filmmaker Lynne Ramsay gives an uncanny third-person subjective look at a troubled child, Kevin, who grows up t be more erratic and violent. The story unfolds through dreams and recollections of Kevin’s mother, Eva.

Tilda Swinton, once again, shows her ability to express nuanced emotions, while Ezra Miller shows unlikely maturity in carrying the menacing persona. The result is chilling to the core. The film uses its locations to create the ambiance of brooding horror. If ‘We Need to Talk About Kevin’ makes you want to pin down all the filming locations, let us take you out on a tour.

We Need to Talk About Kevin Filming Locations

‘We Need to Talk About Kevin’ was filmed in locations across the US and Spain, mainly in Connecticut and New York. Filming commenced on April 19, 2010, and was completed by May 28 of the same year. Let us now take you to the specific locations where the film was shot!

Valencia, Spain

The filming unit took a short trip to Spain to film an important early scene in the movie. As per the narrative, Eva takes a trip to Europe with Franklin, and she regrets not having stayed in France. Although the team did not go to France, they went to the neighboring country of Spain to capture a celebration of La Tomatina or the Tomato Festival. The brooding and symbolic scenes were filmed in the township of Buñol in the province of Valencia in Spain.

Stamford, Connecticut

The production unit filmed most of the sequences on location in Stamford, a city in the Fairfield County of Connecticut. Towards the beginning of the movie, Eva comes to her lonely blood-drenched house from the prison where her son is sentenced. Eva’s house can be located at 153 Culloden Road in a suburban neighborhood of the city.

Eva goes looking for a job as a typist at a travel agency. The scenes were filmed at 1074 Hope Street in the same city.

In one scene, Eva goes out for lunch from her workplace. She asks if her colleagues want anything, but no one speaks to her. The sequence was filmed at 1092 Hope Street not far from her workplace.

Towards the middle of the film, Eva, Franklin, and their newborn toddler move into a bigger and better house, or a “castle,” in Franklin’s word. A posh estate located at 579 Westover Road served as the house in the movie.

The high school where the final bout of violence erupts is also in the same city. The crew filmed the scenes at J. M. Wright Technical School, a technical high school located at 120 Bridge Street in Stamford.

Norwalk, Connecticut

A few scenes were filmed at the same state, at the township of Norwalk, a few miles away from Stamford. In one sequence in the movie, Eva takes Kevin to a miniature golf course. Kevin wears simple and short clothes while Eva is extravagantly dressed. The scenes were filmed at Norwalk Cove Marina Mini-Golf, a mini-golf course located at 44 Calf Pasture Beach Road in Norwalk.

New York City, New York

A disturbing sequence was filmed in the city of New York. Eva takes baby Kevin out, but he keeps crying relentlessly, and Eva stops near a road construction site. The cry gradually drowns in the noise of the drilling machine as the camera closes in on Eva. The scene was filmed at the intersection of Hubert Street and Greenwich Street in the middle of New York’s bustling Manhattan District.
