Review: 13 Reasons Why Season 3 Episode 6

’13 Reasons Why’ Season 3 Episode 6 shows us one of the most important moments of the show, that is, Bryce’s funeral. While his case is ongoing, the funeral is a chance to view all the suspects in one room, as Mrs. Walker comments that one of them must have killed Bryce.

Surprisingly, a new suspect emerges by the end of the episode, but most importantly, Episode 6 focuses on the possibility of Tony having killed Bryce. The Mexican, known for his anger issues, has delivered many a fatal beating before, thus forcing us to consider him as a plausible suspect. “You Can Tell the Heart of a Man By How He Grieves” is an episode that not only shows Bryce at his most human and lovable but also shows how different people grieve different losses.

13 Reasons Why Season 3 Episode 6 Recap:

Episode 6 of ’13 Reasons Why’ begins with a change of pace as we see Tony in the interrogation room instead of Ani. Being a person of color with two strikes on his record, Tony is a legitimate person of interest in Bryce’s case. Even as the cops question him, the episode shows us Bryce’s funeral.

Despite the jock being disgraced and without friends, the funeral is a touching affair with plenty of people showing up. Bryce’s mother pointedly comments that the killer is one of them, making us wonder yet again who it might be. Zach still seems to be the most likely candidate as we see him deliver a speech about being his brother’s keeper. Notably, Zach sits next to Bryce’s ex-girlfriend, Chloe, at the funeral. When Bryce’s mother speaks about her dead son, the show makers use the opportunity to try to raise some sympathy for Bryce. Perhaps for the first time, we see the child in the grown man as we see Bryce defend his mother in front of his father. There is another touching scene that shows Bryce and Mrs. Walker spending some quality time together as they paint a room. However, the takeaway is the fact that Bryce’s father had a motive to kill Bryce. It appears that he has a lovechild that Bryce found out about, which might have put a wrench in the divorce proceedings. Thus, it might have prompted Mr. Walker to take action against his son.

Coming back to Tony’s story, his boyfriend Caleb tells Clay and Ani how Tony’s family was apprehended by the immigration officials and deported back to their own country. Tony tried his best to fight a legal battle but needed money for that. Bryce had stepped in, buying Tony’s Mustang for more than the asking price, choosing to give him thousands of dollars to fight his legal battle. It is yet another moment of Bryce’s humanity as he tells Tony that the money he is giving him is what Bryce’s father gives him to keep away. Towards the end of the episode, there is a touching scene where Clay seems to bond more with his family. Elsewhere, we see the sheriff’s office looking at tapes from the Walker residence, which shows Clay pointing a gun at Bryce. In case you have forgotten, it happened in Season 2 when Justin talked Clay out of taking matters into his own hands after Bryce’s testimony during the trial where the Baker family sued the school for Hannah’s suicide.

13 Reasons Why Season 3 Episode 6 Review:

Episode 6 of ’13 Reasons Why’ is perhaps one of the more impactful episodes, giving the most human view of Bryce, through the eyes of his mother. Like always, the show seems to be telling us that there is more than one side to the story. Meanwhile, Clay seems to be another red herring while Zach remains a likelier candidate since Zach’s lies have not yet caught up with him.

The mystery is progressing and the next few episodes will definitely see more secrets spill out.
