Andrew Koji Joins Cast of G.I. Joe Spinoff ‘Snake Eyes’

Andrew Koji has come aboard to play Storm Shadow as the cast of ‘Snake Eyes’, the G.I. Joe spinoff movie. Best known as the star of the Cinemax martial arts western series, ‘Warrior’, Koji joins as Snake Eyes’ main antagonist in the movie. As we reported previously, Henry Golding, of ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ fame, is playing the part of Snake Eyes, the titular ninja with a vow of silence.

For those unaware, the character of Storm Shadow is based on the Hasbro toy of the same name. Storm Shadow first appeared in the 1984 toy line. He was intended to be the villainous counterpart to Snake Eyes, in league with Cobra. However, the character went on to have layered loyalties. In 1988, the figure was declared to be a part of the G.I. Joe team, but in 2000, once again, Storm Shadow switched loyalties and went back to Cobra. The wavering commitment comes from the character’s fictional backstory which says that Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow were old comrades from the army as well as blood brothers. Naturally, Storm Shadow feels drawn to Snake Eyes and his cause, but his loyalty is also tested since he is the latest member of a long family line of ninja assassins.

The ‘Snake Eyes’ movie will surely deal with Storm Shadow’s shifting loyalties but the plot of the movie will focus more on Snake Eyes seeking revenge for his father’s death, which leads him to join a ninja clan and in the process, finds acceptance. The movie comes from Paramount and AllSpark Pictures, working in partnership with Skydance. The script has been written by Evan Spiliotopoulos, best known for working on films like ‘Beauty and the Beast‘ and ‘The Huntsman: Winter’s War‘. Robert Schwentke, who has directed the ‘Divergent‘ movies, is helming the project. Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Brian Goldner are on board as the producers. ‘Snake Eyes’ is slated to be released on October 16, 2020.

Interestingly, Paramount has made two G.I. Joe movies before, that is, ‘G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra’ in 2009 and ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ in 2013. Byung-Hun Lee played the role of Storm Shadow in both these films. Viewers must be aware that the relationship between Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow was mildly touched upon in the movies, wherein it was showed that Storm Shadow had killed his and Snake Eyes’ mentor, driving the latter into a vow of silence. It remains to be seen if the spinoff retells the story in detail, or decides to tell a different origin story.
