Arturo Calderón Gamiño: What Happened to Alejandra Mendoza’s Husband?

When Eleanor Alejandra Marin Mendoza was arrested in 2009 for the kidnapping of a newborn baby, her husband, Arturo Calderón Gamiño, was arrested along with her. Even though Arturo said that he had no knowledge of his wife’s plans and had genuinely believed that she was pregnant throughout this time, he claimed that he only found out about the kidnapping after she showed him the stolen baby. He spent about two years behind bars but was ultimately acquitted after a trial. Netflix’s ‘A Child of My Own’ (originally titled ‘Un hijo propio’) features his interview, in which he spoke about that time and how his life changed after the incident.

Arturo Calderón Gamiño Had No Idea That His Wife Was Faking Her Pregnancy

In 2000, Arturo Calderón Gamiño and Eleanor Alejandra Marin Mendoza got married and were ready to start their family. However, one after the next, Alejandra had two miscarriages, and she claimed that her husband and in-laws allegedly placed the onus on her and supposedly told her to keep trying for another baby. In the documentary, Alejandra said that when she found out she was pregnant for the third time in 2008, Arturo told her to be very careful and even suggested that she leave her job at Hospital General de México, but she did not agree. Arturo himself added that he truly believed they were going to be blessed with a son and was excitedly looking forward to becoming a father.

In the months that followed, Arturo was a doting husband to his seemingly pregnant wife. He walked around with a video recorder because he wanted to capture all the special moments during that time. He said that he never for a moment doubted that his wife was pregnant and completely believed her. On June 17, 2009, Alejandra went to the hospital alone, and that was when she kidnapped Mayra Aurora Navarro Vega’s newborn daughter, Katia Valentina. Arturo has said that he knew nothing about her plan and only found out what she had done after she showed him the stolen baby. He decided to go to the Hotel Hollywood and spend the night there, and that is where they were both arrested on kidnapping charges shortly after midnight.

Arturo Calderón Gamiño Was Acquiited of All Charges After Two Yearrs Behind Bars

Arturo Calderón Gamiño remained under arrest for almost two years until his trial began in 2011. Based on the evidence presented, it was established that he had, in fact, not known about Alejandra’s plans and was not complicit in the kidnapping. He was acquitted of all charges, but he said that the psychological scars stayed with him. He admitted that he was quite angry with Alejandra in the initial days, but eventually began talking to her. They were able to meet on common ground, and Arturo even told her that they could explore other options, such as IVF and surrogacy, to have a child once she was released from prison.

Arturo continued to visit her behind bars, and the couple stayed together. It is because of their efforts that their marriage has survived to date. In 2023, when Alejandra was released from prison, Arturo went to pick her up. When she told him that she did not want to have a child of her own, he openly said that it was not something he could let go of. He later had a son with another woman and became a father, as he had always wanted. Arturo has introduced his son to Alejandra, and the child is a part of their life in the Iztacalco area of Mexico City.
