4. My Brother…Nikhil (2005)

A brilliant story about the taboo of homosexuality and AIDS in India, this movie is one of a kind and might I say quite forward from its time. In 2005, Sanjay Suri and Juhi Chawla acted in a film which talks about LGBT rights and the senseless exclusion of a person based on the fact that he is HIV Positive. In a time when Goa government could arrest individuals who had AIDS, an affected man Nikhil is put into prison for being a patient. His sister Anamika and his boyfriend Nigel attempt to take him out of jail, fighting the corrupt and conservative system. In the meantime, Nikhil tries to reconcile with his family and especially his father who is disappointed to see his champion swimmer son turn into a joke. A must-see for every individual, this is a movie which challenges many set notions of Indian society and as such will change how you look at life.

3. Mangal Pandey: The Rising (2005)

A historic film about India’s first freedom struggle against the British Raj, this movie is a must watch for every Indian. It shows the tale of a certain sepoy Mangal Pandey of the British regiment who revolted against the disregard Britishers showed towards the faith and feelings of Indians. In a beautiful manner, this film tells about the first spark into the fire of freedom that ultimately led to India’s independence.

2. Sarkar (2005)

Another masterpiece involving Amitabh, Sarkar is a movie of the generations which is sure to bring you closer to the dark side of your personality. Loosely based on Mario Puzo’s The Godfather, the movie weaves the story of Subhash Nagare, the infamous don of Mumbai endearingly referred to as the Sarkar. However, when his elder son mutinies against him, it is up to the younger son Shankar to save his father from the evil plans of their enemies before they decimate the ‘Sarkar’ completely.

1. Black (2005)

2005 seems to be Amitabh Bachchan’s year. With more than five blockbuster films releasing in the year, Amitabh proved that he is not only made for the commercial cinema but is a master of his art. The story of a strange connection between deaf, dumb, and mute girl Michelle and his teacher Debraj Sahai Black is a story that can make even the strongest of people cry their hearts out. The only motive in life for Michelle is getting a graduate degree inspite of standing in the darkness of obscurity. When Debraj comes, he identifies the fire and potential in her. He brings her out of the shadows and gives her a future that she deserves.
