Helmed by Veronica Rodriguez, ‘Camp Rock 3’ brings us back to the iconic summer music camp that was first introduced in ‘Camp Rock 1,’ and was already a household name by the time ‘Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam’ was released. This time, we follow a new generation of artists who find themselves in a race to become the opening act for Connect 3, the popular band of Shane, Nate, and Jason Gray. However, while they actively play a role all throughout this musical comedy film, there is one more character whose presence is felt in subtle ways. Mitchie Torres, who joined the summer camp at the same time as the Gray brothers, is also revealed to have become a music sensation since, and her love for this camp is far from being forgotten. Demi Lovato Returns as Mitchie to Pass the Baton to the New Generation
Demi Lovato steals the show with a cameo appearance in the end, portraying the iconic Mitchie Torres. While Shane, Jason, and Nate feature throughout the movie and have an entire arc to themselves, Mitchie enters the story as an enigma of sorts, only there for a handful of scenes, but also the best ones. Ahead of the making of this film, Nick, Joe, and Kevin Jonas, along with Lovato, were reported to have joined as executive producers. However, while the Jonas brothers confirmed their on-screen participation early on, the update about Lovato had to wait a little longer. Then, a few days before the global release of ‘Camp Rock 3,’ Disney teased Lovato stepping back into the role, and the rest is history.
Lovato’s role in the film marks the first time in 16 years that she’s donned this particular fictional garb, and the wait seems to have been worth it. The story builds up to her appearance in subtle ways, be it the discovery of Mitchie’s secret diary or the return of Maria Canals-Barrera, who plays Mitchie’s mother, Torrie. With Lovato returning as Mitchie in the movie’s final climactic sequence, we get to see a passing of the torch moment, where Mitchie clarifies from the get-go that this is not a story about her anymore, but about the next generation. Fittingly, she also brings back her most iconic phrase from the first movie: “She’s really good!” except this time it’s not a compliment for Caitlyn’s performance, but that of Sage’s.
Playing Mitchie Again Turned Out to be a Healing Experience For Demi Lovato
While the idea for a ‘Camp Rock’ sequel has been a part of pop culture discourse for quite some time, it came to life rather spontaneously. Much like Nick, Joe, and Kevin Jonas, Demi Lovato described this as the perfect time for a reunion movie, with everything seemingly falling into place at once. She and the Jonas brothers have remained great friends over the years, and it’s not unusual for them to make surprise appearances at each other’s music tours. However, ‘Camp Rock 3’ marks their first time sharing the big screen together in almost two decades, and Lovato described it as a therapeutic experience while talking to Entertainment Tonight.
“It’s been really, really healing and nostalgic for me, you know, getting to step back into this role is so important,” Lovato expressed, reminiscing on how this is the role that started it all. She was, and continues to be, particularly impressed by the new cast of characters, and even mentored them during the filming process. In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, actor Lumi Pollack, who plays the role of Rosie in ‘Camp Rock 3,’ recalled some precious advice, “Demi told us to not be afraid to ask for breaks or to say no.” Interestingly, Lovato gave the same advice when asked by Access Hollywood what she would tell her past self, from the time of the original Camp Rock movies. Having learned a lot over the years and grown as an artist, Lovato brings something unique to this third film, truly honoring Mitchie’s legacy.
