Carlos Suárez was an adventure sports athlete, climber, BASE jumper, and pioneering wingsuit pilot. He also became the central subject of the Spanish film ‘To the Max,’ directed by Salvador Calvo, which mines inspiration from the thrilling adventures of the climber and his group of similarly hobbyed friends. In real life, Suárez and his group of fellow BASE jumpers, Armando del Rey, Darío Barrio, Manolo Chana, and Álvaro Bultó, undertook many ventures together, mixing wingsuit flying with BASE jumping, a kind of extreme sport involving jumping from high places with a parachute for landing. Tragically, in the 2010s, three members from this group of five suffered fatal accidents during such jumps, which ended up costing them their lives. Suárez himself avoided many near-death incidents throughout his career. Unfortunately, in 2025, the climber passed away following an unexpected accident.
Carlos Suárez Died While Performing a Stunt During the Filming of To the Max
Carlos Suárez led an impressive life, venturing on thrilling adventurous journeys and expanding the horizons of his field of expertise. He entered the world of extreme sports at a young age, solo climbing numerous prominent peaks at the age of 17. Furthermore, he even earned the title of the Spanish Sport Climbing Champion for three years. Suárez was also friends with a number of other extreme sports athletes, who routinely forayed into new adventures, climbs, and jumps together. However, around the 2010s, a string of misfortune befell the group. Manolo Chana died in 2010, followed by Álvaro Bultó and Darío Barrio, who met their demises in 2013 and 2014, respectively.
All three deaths were a result of a BASE jump or skydiving incident gone wrong. In fact, Barrio’s death took place at an event meant to commemorate the tragic passing of Bultó. As such, when these climbers became the subject of the film ‘To the Max,’ the project strived to celebrate their joyous adventures alongside honoring their departures. Suárez and Armando del Rey, the surviving members of this group, were a part of the project, serving as advisors on Alejandro Hernández’s script. Furthermore, the former was set to perform and film a stunt as part of the production. Sometime in the early 2020s, Suárez made the El Torreón de Los Galayos climb and executed a first base jump.
However, the wingsuit pilot got caught in an accident, which left him severely injured. Miraculously, Suárez managed to walk away from the incident alive. Yet, the traumatic incident, paired with the piling losses of his close friends, compelled him to quit BASE jumping and wingsuit flying. Even so, in 2025, he decided to return to the high-risk sport for ‘To the Max,’ as a tribute to the friends he had lost along the way. The stunt jump was being filmed in a private event with strict measures of security in place.
Suárez, along with four others, including del Rey, performed the jump from a hot-air balloon. However, following the jump, the BASE jumper’s parachute and reserve didn’t open, leading to a crash. As per reports, the production failed to immediately flag this tragic accident. Afterward, once the film crew arrived to pick up the pilots, they noticed Suárez’s absence, which resulted in the discovery of the crash site. Thus, on April 1, 2025, the 52-year-old wingsuit pilot tragically lost his life. In death, Suárez leaves behind a commendable legacy. He is survived in the memory of his loved ones, including his wife, Miriam, and their daughter, Maira.
