Where is Christopher Martin Now? Accused Guilty or Innocent Update

While the Mennonite community follows an old, simple, traditional way of living well away from mainstream and urban society, they are still subject to the law in every capacity. Therefore, Christopher Martin was arrested on one count of child endangerment roughly two months after the August 26, 2022, death of his 3-year-old daughter, Lucille Martin. He has always maintained that what happened to her was an accident, but law enforcement officials believed his actions amounted to criminal negligence. The episode titled ‘Negligent Father or Tragic Accident?,’ of A&E’s ‘Accused: Guilty or Innocent?’ details both perspectives and how the case came to a close.

Christopher Martin Lost His Daughter While Harvesting His Tobacco Field

Since Christopher Martin was born into the Mennonite community in rural Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, he has always proudly abided by its different cultures and customs. He happily tied the knot with his loving wife, Lucy Martin, in the spring of 2015 after knowing her all his life, shortly following which they settled down together and started a family. They welcomed 4 children into their world – Jonathan Martin, Dennis Martin, Lucille Martin, and another baby girl – but tragedy struck when their second youngest sadly passed away at age 3 on their tobacco field.

According to the documentary, Christopher heeded tradition and introduced his kids to farm work at an early age, so whether it be cleaning up, helping with feeding, or just observing, they did it all. Thus, when Lucy asked him to take the kids to the field on August 26, 2022, because she wanted to get ahead on laundry and other chores around the house, he did so without hesitation. He knew he was going to be harvesting that day alongside his brother and brother-in-law, but he admittedly wasn’t worried because he’d had the youngsters with him several times before.

Christopher never expected that Lucille would either step down or fall from the cart of their slow horse-drawn plow while they were stopped, and then come under the heavy wagon wheel. As per the show, the command to have the horses go again was given by his brother-in-law, Lester Hoover, since he was closest to the machine at the time, but they quickly realized something was amiss. The moment the bump came, all adults cried for the horses to stop and rushed to the other side, only to see the 3-year-old hurt. Her father immediately rushed to the nearest telephone to call the emergency services, but it was too late by the time they arrived.

Christopher Martin is Currently Serving His Probationary Sentence

According to records, Christopher was honest throughout his interview with authorities at the scene, but the 2 horses, cart, and wagon had all been moved from there for Lucille’s recovery. The incident was ruled an accident by officials, but it was still investigated further to determine whether it was preventable. Hence, once they came to believe it was, the father of 4 was arrested. He was charged on one count of child endangerment because it was his responsibility to look after his children; neither his brother nor his brother-in-law was indicted in the matter.

Christopher admitted on the show that he always checked on the kids in the cart before asking the horses to move, but no one did so on the fateful day. His defense attorney also believed it was a temporary lack of concentration and oversight on their part. Yet, it did result in the loss of an innocent life, and that’s what the prosecutors focused on. In the end, the father of 4 stood trial for the charge against him, but he opted for a bench trial rather than a jury one so as to avoid any bias towards his community and their way of life. During proceedings, the prosecutors claimed Lucille’s death was preventable because she should never have even been in the harvesting field in the first place.

The prosecutors then underscored that there was no place for the toddler to sit in the small cart and that it had no side or back railings to prevent her from moving or falling. On the flip side, Christopher testified in his own defense to shine a light upon how they believe his daughter’s passing was nothing more than a tragic accident. Ultimately, after an hour and a half of careful deliberations, the judge ruled in favor of the Commonwealth and found the father of 4 guilty of child endangerment. He faced up to 10 years in prison, but he was sentenced to a relatively lenient 7-year probation based on the evidence presented and was allowed to return home. From what we can tell, Christopher will remain under state supervision until 2032.
