Directed by Matías Gueilburt, HBO Max’s ‘Cannibal Poet’ (also known as ‘Poeta Caníbal’) is a documentary series exploring the alleged crimes of suspected serial killer José Luis Calva Zepeda. It is believed he took the lives of at least three women before cannibalizing them, yet he was never convicted of any offense, as he died by suicide while awaiting a trial on December 11, 2007. His purported motive was reportedly rooted in narcissism and resentment toward women stemming from childhood trauma, which his sister Claudia Calva Zepeda delved into in the show.
Claudia Calva Zepeda and José Calva Zepeda’s Upbringing Was Far From Conventional or Safe
It was around the mid-1960s in Mexico City, Mexico, that Claudia Calva Zepeda was born to joyous parents Elia Cepeda Zepeda Camarena and Esteban Calva Téllez as one of their 6 children. She thus grew up surrounded by 3 sisters plus 2 brothers: Patricia Calva Zepeda, Guadalupe Calva Zepeda, Elena Calva Zepeda, Jorge Calva Zepeda, and José Calva Zepeda, with the latter being the youngest (born June 20, 1969). According to her own accounts, her early years residing at 7 Nicolás San Juan in the upscale neighborhood of Colonia del Valle Centro, Benito Juárez, were full of happiness and peace.

The Calva Zepeda youngsters had a pool and plenty of space to run around on their property, which they took complete advantage of for as long as they could to lead active, playful lives. However, everything turned upside down after their father passed away in late 1971 because the attention they used to receive suddenly vanished. After all, not only did their mother have to start working, but she soon also stepped back into the dating world and got into some bad relationships. The fact that she herself reportedly had quite a domineering personality didn’t help either, especially since it led her younger kids to be afraid to speak up, no matter the situation.
Claudia still remembers the alleged neglect, yet the person she believes affected her and her younger brother’s childhood the most was a man their mother was involved with for years. She claimed that this man even moved into the family home, but her and José’s bond with him was “difficult” because he was allegedly physically as well as sexually abusive towards them. “I left home one day before my 15th birthday because of the sexual abuse,” she stated in the docuseries, adding that she took her younger brother, too. Since she’d realized he suffered the same purported abuse, she ensured he was by her side when she walked away and moved in with an older sister.
Claudia Calva Zepeda Prefers to Lead a Quiet Life Well Away From the Limelight
Claudia will forever be grateful to their older sister, as she opened her doors to them without hesitation upon learning what had allegedly happened. The way she even got to celebrate her coming-of-age birthday a little by eating snacks on the street with her siblings is also something she still vividly remembers with a bittersweet feeling. That’s because the preparation for her quinceañera was all done, and she’d even practiced the waltz with the man she was forced to call her stepdad, but she just couldn’t go through with it. As per her own accounts, she struggled a lot in the years to follow owing to the loss of the life she had always imagined and the trauma of everything else.

However, from what we can tell, Claudia has since come out the other side thanks to the unwavering support of her siblings and close friends – they helped her heal over time. It’s possible she still has some bad days because what she allegedly endured does leave an internal scar, yet now she knows she is strong, resilient, and can survive anything life throws at her. Therefore, it appears as if she is currently leading a content, quiet life, well away from prying eyes in the beautiful coastal state of Guerrero, Mexico, where she is surrounded by loved ones.
We should also mention that when José was arrested on suspicion of murder and cannibalism in October 2007, Claudia was one of the only family members to publicly speak up. While she reportedly didn’t comment on his alleged crimes or the situation, she raised questions after he was found hanging in his jail cell on the morning of December 11, 2007. According to records, she initially claimed her brother could have been killed because he was allegedly being mistreated by fellow prisoners and guards alike. Officials vehemently disputed her allegations, but it was only after an autopsy confirmed he died by suicide that she withdrew all her accusations.
