4. A Bigger Splash (2015)
‘A Bigger Splash’ should have made a bigger splash than it did. it certainly deserved so. A taut and electrifying thriller, the movie featured charismatic performances from a talented ensemble. A riveting tale of passion, love, and deceit, sees Johnson assume the role of Penelope, a stunning and mysterious girl, who visits a begrimed pair with a nuisance of an entity. Posing as almost five years older her age, her arrogant and self-assured display sure brought about a lot of contradictions, something which the film benefited from immensely.
3. How To Be Single (2016)
Johnson’s complete make-over in the film, both physically and personality-wise, was truly humbling. Moving away from her monotonous and restricted life, Alice (Johnson) decides to leave her boyfriend and instead pursue a life of freedom and partying. Conniving with her wild co-worker Robin (Rebel Wilson), she wrecks havoc on the city and indeed shows us “how to be single.” Simple and engaging, the movie offers a lot for the audience to grab on to. Evading dull moments like that guy in the wall meme, the film slightly loses its way in the middle trying to over-emphasise her new-found independence. Apart from that, a brilliant effort from the whole cast, led by the charming Dakota Johnson.
2. Fifty Shades of Grey (2015)
The character of Anastasia Steele perhaps will be remembered for the innocent eyes and majestic smile of Dakota Johnson. ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ became one of the biggest commercial hits on its release. Christian Grey, a multibillionaire entrepreneur becomes infatuated with a journalist, Ana, who is herself covering for her friend who got ill. This coincidence results in a great love affair between the two, filled with glorifying ups and disheveling downs. The chemistry between the pair is electrifying and the highlight of the movie. Even though we see a lot of nudity, its done tastefully and in a non-offensive manner. An emphatic message of her arrival!
1. Black Mass (2015)
While everyone was busy going gaga over Johnny Depp’s chilling portrayal of Whitey Bulgar, Johnson’s emotional and passionate turn as his girl-friend was overlooked. The film chronicles the rise of Bulgar as a wholesome gangster, controlling Boston through his Winter Hill Gang. Filled with pleasant surprises and gory assassinations, the narrative gets a humane touch with the introduction of Johnson’s character, Lindsay. A single mother, her troubled relationship with Whitey further worsens as the authorities close in on their prized target. Nimble and restrained in her performance, Johnson does a superlative job in holding the screen together, and providing us with a memorable performance.
