2. Annihilation (2018)
In this sci-fi thriller by Alex Garland, Gina Rodriguez played the role of Anya Thorensen, a paramedic who joins the team of five women who venture to unravel the secrets of the Shimmer. Easily, one of the best films to come out this year (yet), ‘Annihilation’ had a lot of scope for its actors to give great performances. While Natalie Portman enjoyed the central attention, Rodriguez was the real winner. With a complex character that rapidly deteriorates with her time in the Shimmer, Gina Rodriguez perfected the role of broken and confused Anya. She was a show stealer in every frame that captured her. What began as a bit light-hearted character, slowly turned dark and twisted. And, Rodriguez portrayed this transition with much ease.
