Where is Jeff Carter Now? Accused: Guilty or Innocent Update

When Michael Blake Campbell was found dead inside a home at 7293 Highway 141 North in Beech Grove, Arkansas, on June 14, 2019, his family was left questioning precisely what transpired. That’s because the structure this 19-year-old married, soon-to-be father of two, was in belonged to his stepfather of 6 years, and it was engulfed in flames when officials first arrived at the scene. In fact, as explored in A&E’s ‘Accused: Guilty or Innocent?: Arson Death or Family Tragedy?,’ emergency services were called for the fire, and they had no idea Michael was even inside until later. It was sadly too late by the time he was discovered, only for his once-supportive stepfather, Jeffrey “Jeff” Carter, to be arrested in connection with the same more than 4 years later in July 2023.

Jeff Carter Came Under Suspicion During the Second Investigation Into His Stepson’s Case

When Jeffrey “Jeff” Carter tied the knot with Deborah “Deb” Campbell Carter on June 7, 2013, they knew what they were getting into, as they both had children of their own from past unions. They thus became a big, happy blended unit of 8, which grew to a steady 10 by the time the late 2010s rolled around – the couple had blissfully welcomed two adorable children of their own. Among the youngsters was Michael Blake Campbell, Deborah’s second-oldest, who had allegedly gotten in some serious criminal/legal trouble for a while before starting to work with Jeff in 2016. According to the show, he was determined to turn his life around since he now had a growing family of his own, so he primarily did some maintenance work for his well-established broker stepfather.

Jeff has reportedly been in the real estate industry since the early 2000s, helming Farmland Realty and Jeff Carter Real Estate Services across areas in Arkansas, Missouri, and Tennessee. Therefore, he was quite successful by the time his stepson came into the picture and began helping out, making the events of June 14, 2019, even more shocking for more reasons than one. According to records, Jeff purchased the property at 7293 Highway 141 North in Beech Grove, Arkansas, in April 2019 for $25,000, only to have it insured for nearly four times that amount, at $80,000. Records indicate he filed an insurance claim shortly after being informed of the fire, before officials had controlled the flames or identified Michael’s remains inside.

It was after the entire structure burned to the ground that authorities not only located Michael’s charred remains inside but also uncovered evidence indicating the flame was started inside. Hence, following a brief investigation wherein experts helped ascertain that the 19-year-old victim started the fire himself, the matter was seemingly closed. His loved ones all disputed this claim in the years to follow because they did not believe he was responsible, ultimately leading to the case being reopened in 2023. What followed were reinterviews with family members and witnesses, as well as inquiries into Jeff and why his insurance claim was denied, all of which led to him becoming the prime suspect in the matter.

There Seemed to be Significant Circumstantial Evidence Against Jeff Carter

Jeff was arrested on one count each of arson, fraudulent insurance acts, and negligent homicide in July 2023, by which point he and the family had relocated to Lewisburg, Tennessee. He was subsequently extradited to Arkansas, with the authorities alleging he was the one who had hired his stepson to burn down the property so as to be rid of it while still profiting from it. However, according to records, his insurance claim was denied after he refused to answer questions regarding the fire and his stepson’s death under oath, despite his claiming he had no hand in the matter. The real estate agent vehemently maintained the same following his arrest, and his wife/the victim’s mother, supported him every step of the way. She even started learning law in her free time to help.

While Jeff claimed he did nothing wrong, officials indicated he hadn’t been honest with them throughout their investigations, and there were at least 2 testimonies that incriminated him. As per an affidavit, emergency services had responded to a 911 call about a home explosion at 8:26 pm on June 14, 2019, and the entire place was engulfed in flames by the time they arrived at the scene. However, the “For Sale” sign from Jeff Carter Real Estate was still standing in the yard, so they immediately contacted Jeff to let him know what had occurred and ask a few questions. He initially told deputies he had bought the property a month prior and was renovating it, so some stripped wiring may have sparked the scorching blaze.

However, investigators determined Jeff had purchased the property back in April and alleged that the fire was accelerated by gasoline. In the ensuing inquiries, they found a $50 charge for the same on Michael’s bank account from the same day. As if that’s not enough, Michael’s wife and his friend/the 911 caller, told officials he had told them his stepfather had asked him to set the home on fire in exchange for a “couple thousand.” While the wife had come forward the day after the victim sadly passed away, his friend did not say anything until he was granted complete immunity during the reinvestigations in 2023. The friend was an alleged accomplice in the matter as the victim had texted him, “We gotta go take care of some stuff for Jeff,” at 4:45 pm on the fateful day, and was also injured in the explosion.

Following His Probation, Jeff Carter Appears to be Focused on His Business and His Family

Despite the circumstantial evidence against Jeff and the possibility that he could face up to 36 years in prison if convicted, he wanted to stand trial in hopes of proving his innocence for good. He never once wavered on maintaining he had no hand in the arson or his stepson’s death, and he always claimed he did not try to make a fraudulent claim with his insurance company. Thus, his legal team filed a motion to suppress the 2 winess testimonies based on them being hearsay because neither had heard Jeff give his stepson any order themselves – their remarks were third-hand accounts. However, according to Jeff’s own statements to his lawyer at one point, he had casually remarked during a work meeting that fateful morning that it would be better for him if the place caught fire.

As per the show, Jeff then added that he had indeed called Michael in the evening, but it was to ensure the 19-year-old didn’t act on his casual remark, not to give him any criminal orders. In the end, following extensive discussions between his legal team and the prosecutors, he pleaded no contest to one count of misdemeanor criminal mischief in 2023. He did so in exchange for a sentence of 12 months of unsupervised probation and a $1,000 fine. We should also mention that while the arson charge was reduced to criminal mischief, the fraud and negligent homicide counts were completely dismissed.

Since then, it appears as if Jeff has completed his probation without incident and is now a free man residing in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. There, he is focused on continuing to lead a good life alongside his wife, their blended family, and his successful business. He remains a dedicated real estate professional, serving under the banner of both Farmland Realty and Jeff Carter Real Estate Services. It’s also imperative to note that, having recently celebrated their 13th wedding anniversary, he and Deborah currently seem stronger than ever. In fact, in a Facebook post acknowledging the same, Deborah stated, in part, “Our love story is a testament to the power of resilience, faith, and devotion. We’ve navigated life’s challenges and emerged stronger, our bond fortified by trials and tribulations… I’m grateful for every moment we’ve shared, and I eagerly look forward to the years ahead.”
