If there’s one thing absolutely nobody can deny, it’s that the cold case of Cari Farver couldn’t have been solved without three significant individuals at the Pottawattamie County Sherrif’s Office. After all, it was James “Jim” Doty and Ryan Avis who first willingly took up this matter out of pure intrigue in 2015, only to then dedicate every ounce of their being alongside Anthony “Tony” Kava to uncover the truth. It’s thus no exaggeration to assert they’re the reason it came to light Cari had actually been slain in 2012 itself, following which perpetrator Shanna “Liz” Golyar impersonated her for four years.

Jim Doty is a Sergeant-Investigator Through and Through

It was back in 2007 that Jim first joined the police force as a working road police officer, only to then evolve into a field training officer and crisis negotiator before transferring to the Criminal Investigations Division (CID) in 2013. However, with the help of his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology plus his Master’s degree in Justice Administration & Crime Management, he was able to get a promotion to sergeant in 2017, a year after which his hard work ensured he was appointed as a supervisor within the CID division. The fact he’d managed to solve the Cari Farver case prior to this, alongside his best friend Ryan and Tony, also played a significant role in his promotions.

Therefore, today, we’re happy to report Jim continues to serve as a Sergeant-Investigator at the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office while also dedicating himself to helping at-risk youngsters. In fact, he’s a volunteer to educate/motivate young adults in Sunday School at the Church of Christ in Council Bluffs, and he volunteers at the Christian-based Nebraska Youth Camp for two weeks every summer. The latter is actually the same camp he attended growing up; he once said, “I saw how important it was in my life to have Christian friends who were doing the right things. If I didn’t, who knows what road I would have decided to go down. Now, I like to be someone who can facilitate that in others.” As for his personal standing, this cowboy is in a happy, healthy, long-term relationship with a hairstylist named Sarah Poderys.

Ryan Avis is a Proud Family Man

While it’s true Ryan’s personal life was affected a lot owing to his dedication to Cari Farver’s case — he often spent over 14 hours a day just pouring himself into the clues available — he now seems to be in a much better place. In fact, from what we can tell, it looks like this Morningside College turned Iowa Western Community College Criminal Justice & Police Science graduate is now a loving, present, happily married father of two. Coming to his professional status, he’s been with the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office for over 17 years, with his roles evolving from Detention Officer to Deputy Sheriff to Criminal Investigator. Yet, today, it seems like this Detective is a Deputy-Court Security personnel — a position he thrives in.

Tona Kava is So Much More Than A Digital Forensics Examiner

Although it’s true Tony has always flourished in the fields of Digital Forensics and Cyber Crime Security thanks to a combination of his hard work plus interest, there’s also a charm in him owing to his being on the spectrum. After all, it has only enabled him to do wonders, whether as a System Support Technician in the corporate world or as an IT Supervisor plus Information Security Officer for the government. It thus comes as no surprise he was even appointed Vice President of the Pottawattamie County Special Deputies from 2019-2023, and he continues to serve various other organizations in this domain. Though most importantly, he’s now a Digital Forensics or Technology Administrator at the Sheriff’s Office, all the while also spreading his wings as a public speaker as well as a hacker.
