6. The Big Wedding (2013)
When you have Robert de Niro, Diane Keaton and Susan Sarandon in one frame, with Robin Williams lurking on the sides, you expect something spectacular. This film isn’t so. It is mildly enjoyable, and all good things about it are owed to Robert de Niro and Robin Williams. Maybe it was the company of such actors that other cast members weren’t so bad, either. Heigl and de Niro’s father-daughter relationship takes centre stage and a few scenes are quite heart-warming.
5. Unforgettable (2017)
Katherine Heigl’s Tessa Connover can’t get over her ex-husband, David. She is agitated when David decides to move in with his girlfriend, Julia, and makes it her life-goal to throw Julia out of their lives so she can be with David again. A good, one-time watch, this film lacked an original storyline. However, the actors did give some good performances. Heigl proved Tessa to be formidable and the not the kind of woman you’d want to be on the wrong side of.
4. Home Sweet Hell (2015)
When Don Champagne’s wife Mona (Heigl) finds out about his affair with his employee, Dusty, things change in the most unexpectable way. The only reason this film is so high up the list is because of Heigl’s acting. To sit through this film was a bit of an ordeal sometimes. Heigl was unexpectedly refreshing in this otherwise dull film. The credit goes to the people who wrote Mona’s character. That is the only good thing they did about this film.
3. Jenny’s Wedding (2015)
Jenny has always been a good girl, the favourite kid, someone who is rational and has never really made a mistake. This is how her family sees her. But their perception of Jenny flips around when they discover that she is gay. Yes, this film had a lot of room for improvement, but it was also very real. The reaction of her parents and the society and how it changes the way they see her was tackled quite realistically.
2. 27 Dresses (2008)
Oh, it’s a chick-flick, alright! But one of the good ones. It has a typical storyline of “boy meets girl, then loses her, then gets her back”, and this film does that with a good execution. Jane Nichols, played by Katherine Heigl, is a wedding planner. Her love for weddings is discovered by Kevin Doyle, played by James Marsden, who decides to write an article on her, without her knowing. This film established Heigl as the queen of rom-com and was definitely a career-defining deal for her.
1. Grey’s Anatomy (2005-2010)
Izzie Stevens was Katherine Heigl’s best role yet, largely because it was in a TV show. The best thing about TV shows is that there is a lot of room for character growth and development. And this is what we got to see with Izzie’s character. Hers was, perhaps, the most progressive character arc in the show. Heigl bagged an Emmy and a few other awards for her portrayal of Stevens. Leaving the show at its high point is something that she regretted later, but that it a completely different matter. The point remains that this was the best character she has played, yet.
