While the others don’t believe Ian, he is convinced that the girl who called him is his daughter. He is proven right soon enough, and eventually he finds Henry Reid, the kidnapper, with whom a showdown turns deadly. As Henry runs away with Mags, now named Sarah, and his injured wife, Jenna, Ian chases after them, knowing that this might be his final chance to get his daughter back. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Ian Chases After Henry and Sarah With Donnie

When Ian and Bill show up at the Reid house, Henry is in the middle of packing up the truck and driving away with his wife and daughter. The men’s arrival confirms that if he doesn’t run now, he will lose everything, but when Sarah remembers the toy Ian shows her, he starts shooting. In the crossfire, Bill is killed, while Ian and Jenna are injured. While Ian receives help and is patched up at the hospital, Jenna has no such luck. Her husband is adamant about taking her to his father’s compound, believing that she can be helped there, while also knowing that his father will provide them the protection they need from Ian, who will surely find a way back. However, all Sarah sees is her mother bleeding out in the backseat, hoping that they make it to the compound in time.

Henry assures her that everything will be all right and stops at a gas station to refuel. At the same time, Ian also arrives there with Donnie, seeing whom makes Sarah get out of the car, hoping her uncle would help her save her mother. Before this, Ian had held Donnie at gunpoint, knowing that he was the only person who could tell him where Henry was running off to. Though Ian is injured, he is not going to wait around for the cops, believing that it might already be too late if he doesn’t act in time. Donnie understands his situation, but he is also torn about his family. As they drive forth, he assures Ian that he is on his side, but Ian has no reason to believe him anymore. Unbeknownst to them, they catch up with Henry, but by the time Ian sees Sarah, Henry gets her back in the car and drives away.

In this encounter, Ian’s gun drops to the ground, but Donnie makes no move to get it, suggesting that he really is on Ian’s side. Seeing his daughter makes him even more determined to continue the search, and he and Donnie get back on the road. Meanwhile, the cops receive a call about a gunshot, which, on investigating, leads them to the discovery that Ian has kidnapped Donnie and has him at gunpoint. At the same time, the detective who dropped Deb off discovers that Ian was there and took Bill’s gun. Dean confirms that his father planned to continue looking for Mags, but he has no idea where he could have gone. He doesn’t blame Ian for this drastic step, given how the police department hasn’t been very helpful to him so far.

Does Ian Find Sarah?

Fortunately for the detectives, they don’t have to wait too long to figure out where Ian went. The incident at the gas station is witnessed by many people, who call it in and provide descriptions of the people involved, especially Ian. As they follow the trail, it becomes clear they need to focus on Henry’s destination, since that’s where Ian is headed, too. In their continued pursuit of Henry and Sarah, Donnie decides to stop the car despite Ian’s threats to shoot him. He is more concerned about Ian, whose wound is getting worse, which means he will most likely bleed out by the time they reach their destination. Henry is forced to accept Donnie’s offer to patch him up. He also uses the opportunity to explain to Ian why Henry kidnapped Mags and turned her into Sarah.

Ian, however, points out that their own tragedy doesn’t make it all right for them to steal someone else’s child. Donnie wants Ian to sympathize with Henry’s loss, but what about what Ian and his family lost? He points out that even if he gets Mags back now, it won’t be the same because a decade has passed. He will never get back the child he lost because she is a grown-up girl who barely even remembers him now. So, even if he wins in the end, it won’t actually be a win. Eventually, Donnie reveals that Henry is headed to their father’s compound. Now that he doesn’t need Donnie anymore, Ian strands him in the middle and drives away alone. In the car, Sarah confronts Henry about Ian’s real identity. He tells her about the compound, blames Donnie for his weakness, and leads Ian to them.

Soon, they reach the compound, which is nothing like he remembered. He thought he would see all the people who still lived there when he and Jenna left, but he didn’t know that the government had swept the place years ago. So now, there is only Gareth and a few other men who have been left behind in the desolate compound. Gareth is confused to see Henry there, but there is no time to ponder his son’s sudden return, as his wife needs help. Unfortunately, it is already too late. When Gareth checks on Jenna, he discovers that she is already dead. This leaves Sarah and Henry devastated. She blames him for not taking her mother to the hospital in time, while he tries to console her while processing his own loss.

As they calm down a bit, Gareth asks Henry to explain what is going on. Henry claims Ian is coming to take away his daughter, but his father suspects his son is not telling him everything. In any case, he has no choice but to help. So when they see Ian approaching, they are prepared to fight him. Sarah is locked inside a room for her safety, but seeing all the guns and whatnot, she is scared that her father is going to do something bad. She sneaks out of the window to warn an outmanned and outgunned Ian. Sure enough, he would have died within minutes of his arrival if it weren’t for Sarah coming out to save him. They hide in a barn, where they are finally alone and can talk to each other without interference.

Why Does Sarah Go With Henry?

By now, Sarah knows that she is not Henry’s biological daughter. She knows she was stolen from the Ridleys. When she confronts Henry about this, he has no choice but to accept the truth. He tells her about the real Sarah, about how she died, how Henry saw his daughter in Mags, and kidnapped her to raise her as his own daughter. At the same time, he also tells her that he is her real father for all intents and purposes. He is the one who raised her, and wasn’t she happy with him and Jenna? Their conversation is interrupted by Gareth and his men, who reveal that Ian is here and they need to go out and fight him. Later, when Sarah is in the barn with Ian, she asks him if he is her father. She tells him she recognized the tune from the toy he showed her last time.

He eagerly shows her their family picture taken when she was still a baby. However, circumstances prevent them from talking any further as Ian has to go out and fight Gareth’s men. When he leaves her, Gareth finds her and decides to use her as bait to draw Ian out. Henry tries to dissuade him from this approach, but when he doesn’t listen, Henry shoots his own father to death. As Sarah runs away, Henry runs after her, and Ian catches up with him. He hits Henry from the back, and he falls to the ground. Ian thinks about killing him. However, he is stopped by Sarah. She asks Ian not to shoot Henry because, while he may have kidnapped her, he is still her father, and she loves him.

For all his follies, he is still the only father she has ever known, and despite the recent revelations, she cannot really hate him. Ian is shocked at her words, though he cannot really blame her for the choice she makes. She points out that although he claims to be her real father, she cannot go with him because she doesn’t know him at all. He says she loved him and knew him when she was a baby, but she has no memory of him, and she cannot abandon her father, whom she remembers being loved by and cared for. She feels sorry for Ian and wishes they had met under different circumstances, and that she could have met his family, which does not include him. She returns Ian’s family photo and leaves with Henry, leaving Ian dumbfounded and heartbroken all over again.

Is Henry Dead?

While the showdown at the compound is underway, Detective Pena and her team dig into Henry and learn about Gareth and his compound. Given the location of the gas station, it makes sense that this is where Henry, and hence Ian, is headed. By the time they reach the periphery of the compound, the gunfight has already happened. Gareth is dead, his men are in the wind, and Sarah has chosen Henry as her father. For a minute, it seems they might get away and start a new life somewhere else, but their path is blocked by the cops who have arrived there fully prepared to fight Henry, his father, and the others on the compound. Seeing only Henry and Sarah in the car, they ask for his peaceful surrender.

At this point, Sarah knows that if his father doesn’t give up, he will die. She tries to convince him to surrender. She talks about their future, believing there might still be a way for them to be together. However, Henry knows that a lifetime in prison is all that awaits him. He has already lost Jenna, and the thought of spending the rest of his life behind bars is not something he can make peace with. In any case, Sarah will be taken back to her birth parents, and despite the stories he told himself about how they were incapable parents, he knows they will take care of her. So, he says his goodbyes and walks out of the car with a gun, leading the cops to perceive him as a threat and shoot him down.

What Happens to Sarah?

Sarah is devastated at losing both her parents in a span of a few hours, but the family and the life she knew are gone now. She is taken into the state’s care, and a few months later, she is brought to Deb’s door. It turns out that the state has decided to place her in Deb’s care. Considering that she is the girl’s birth mother, it makes sense for her to be the one who raises her now. Ian, however, does not have the same right because, in his quest to get Mags back, he has broken several laws and proven himself to be highly impulsive. One cannot blame him for not trusting the cops enough, but it still doesn’t change the fact that his decisions led to Bill’s death, and he also shot at and threatened Donnie to do his bidding.

Deb welcomes Sarah into her house, shows her around, and introduces her to her child with Bill. While she is happy to have her daughter back, she also knows that Sarah can never be Mags. Earlier, she was taken to the Reid house, where she saw the spot where Bill bled to his death. In the house, she felt that her daughter was raised with love and care and that she was happy there, something that Ian never considered and had to face only when Sarah rejected him. This is why Deb treats Sarah not as Mags, but as Henry and Jenna’s daughter, giving her the space to grieve for her parents, even though they were also her kidnappers.

Sarah feels more comfortable about Deb and even asks to join her at Bill’s memorial. Ian is also there, and while his ex-wife and both his children are there, he is the one on the outside now. He expresses his condolences to both Deb and Sarah, showing that he has learned his lesson by not pressuring Sarah to talk to him. In all this mess, he has somehow found his way back to his son, Dean. The chasm between them, that was formed in the years following Mags’ kidnapping, has started to fill up. Dean assures him that, given time, the same will happen to Sarah as well, and maybe even Deb. All Ian has to do is be patient and let them process their grief and their circumstances. In the end, Sarah moves into Deb’s house, and while she plays the piano, Ian goes for a swim, finally free of the weight that had tied him down all these years, while also being left to think about the journey he had to make and the price he had to pay to get there.
