Is Lifetime’s The Babysitter’s Double Life Based on a True Story?

Lifetime’s ‘The Babysitter’s Double Life’ follows Lia, a college student who is on a scholarship and has big plans for her future. However, when that financial support is revoked, she is forced to find a different way to pay for her tuition. She starts working as a nanny for a wealthy businessman named Ethan, and that is when she gets the idea for her own enterprise. Lia begins recruiting young women who can work as nannies but can also act as companions in every way for single, wealthy men.

She is happy with the success it brings, but she soon realizes that what she has created is nothing more than a prostitution ring. Directed by Lisa France, the film shows the lengths to which a person can go when faced with dire financial needs. It also highlights the vulnerabilities of youth, when one impulsive decision can create a problem so tremendous that walking away from it can seem almost impossible.

The Babysitter’s Double Life Likely Mirrors Real Cases of Youth Involvement in Prostitution Rings

Written by Ashley O’Neil, ‘The Babysitter’s Double Life’ is a thriller in every way, especially as Lia finds the circle tightening around her and the consequences of her choices becoming increasingly difficult to escape. The film is not based on any single true event, and all of its characters are fictional. However, that does not mean that the story has no basis in the real world. Young people facing financial difficulties have often gone to great lengths to support themselves. They sometimes become involved in situations far beyond what they initially intended. These real-world vulnerabilities are likely what give the film its sense of realism.

Bizarre as it sounds, there has been a reported case from Florida in which a high school student allegedly ran a prostitution ring involving underage girls. In November 2014, 17-year-old Alexa Nicole De Armas, a student at Sarasota High School, was arrested and faced a felony charge of human trafficking of a person younger than 18. Authorities alleged that she helped arrange sexual encounters involving underage girls in exchange for money and alcohol. Investigators reportedly learned of the alleged ring after four students at Venice High School informed administrators. Police alleged that De Armas helped arrange at least one encounter at a community pool, while other encounters were reportedly organized through Facebook. A 21-year-old man named John Mosher was also arrested and accused of allegedly paying for sex with a 15-year-old girl.

The Movie Shows How Financial Hardships Can Lead to Desperate Choices

A case that echoes the film’s portrayal of a young person becoming involved in an organized prostitution operation is that of Montia Parker, a student from Minnesota. Parker, 18, was an honor-roll student, had already earned college credits, volunteered regularly and served as captain of her school’s cheerleading team. However, in August 2013, she pleaded guilty to three prostitution-related counts after admitting that she had persuaded a 16-year-old fellow cheerleader to enter prostitution, placed an online advertisement and took her to an apartment where a man paid for a sexual act. Parker kept the $60 the girl gave her. She was subsequently sentenced to three years in prison, with at least two years behind bars, and was required to register as a sex offender upon release.

Financial difficulties can sometimes push young people to make choices they would never have considered otherwise, particularly when they feel there is no easy way out of their circumstances. Although ‘The Babysitter’s Double Life’ is not based on a real story, incidents such as those involving young people becoming entangled in prostitution and exploitation show that the film’s central fears are not entirely detached from reality. These cases demonstrate how quickly an impulsive decision or financial pressure can lead someone into situations that become increasingly difficult to control.
