Starring Margaret Qualley as Maya, the film explores the meaning of finding the love of your life and what happens when you lose that love. The narrative unfolds over several years, so we see the protagonist shaped by the people she meets and the experiences she has along the way. Above all, it challenges the viewers’ preconceived notion of how love stories like this should end. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Love of Your Life Plot Synopsis

Maya is a nurse in Boston. Her complicated past has left her closed off from the world, or at least unwilling to entertain the idea of a romantic soulmate. She is solely focused on her work, and life keeps going a certain way until she crosses paths with Charlie. Unlike her, he is an open and amiable person with the enviable ability to befriend anyone. His charm works on Maya as well, and soon they start dating. She introduces him to her best friend from college, Jason, and while she confesses they had a minor thing at one point, Charlie is entirely unconcerned. If anything, he befriends Jason as well. Things escalate quickly as they move in together, and then, before she knows it, she is meeting his family.

Soon, it becomes clear to them that neither wants to be without the other, and they get married in an intimate ceremony in their apartment, attended by their closest friends and family. And then, COVID hits. While the rest of the world is forced to stay inside their homes, Maya has to come out of her house and work with infected patients in the hospital every day. Charlie notes the emotional, if not physical, toll the taxing job and the rising death count is taking on her. One of those evenings, he prepares a special dinner for her, and later, they talk about traveling the world together and having babies. But their plans are ruined when they both get infected. While she recuperates, Charlie, who has asthma, is hit much worse.

Tragically, Charlie passes away in the hospital, where none of the family members, including Maya, are allowed to enter. She informs his family, but when his mother, Ruth, comes knocking, Maya doesn’t open the door. About a year or so later, we find her living in Portugal. She is working remotely, which means she has the freedom to travel. However, there is no joy in doing something she had planned to do with her husband. She seems to have receded into “solitary hedonism” and is resigned to her grief. But then, one evening, she meets Felix, and things take an entirely unexpected turn.

Does Maya End Up With Felix?

Romantic dramas in Hollywood often conclude with a happy ending, in which a character successfully moves on from a previous loss and looks forward to a new life with their romantic partner. Thus, the death of Maya’s husband has the viewers anticipating how long it will take for her to get over her grief and find the second love of her life. The answer seems to emerge in the form of Felix. Once again, this chance meeting turns out rather well for Maya. He is a single father co-parenting his daughter in London, where he runs a business. He, too, has experienced devastating loss in the form of his brother’s suicide. Thus, he and Maya connect on a personal level, but they also share a strong physical connection.

With Felix, Maya starts to loosen up and, once again, feels free to open her heart to someone new. These feelings are reciprocated as he invites her to come with him to London, where he introduces her to his daughter and her mother at the kid’s birthday party. While meeting Charlie’s family confirmed for Maya that she loved him and wanted this with him, meeting Felix’s family has the opposite effect. Instead of showing her what she can have, it reminds her what she stands to lose if something bad happens again. She doesn’t wish to tempt fate a second time, so she decides to break up with him. He is disheartened and disappointed with her decision, but he knows he cannot make her love him if she doesn’t want to.

The experience shows Maya that she is still not ready to love someone new. But at the same time, she continues going to therapy, and some time later, she returns to London. She calls Felix, expressing her intent to try and work things out again, but by now, it is too late. He reminds her she was gone for a long time, and in the meantime, he and Anna, the mother of his daughter, have decided to give their relationship another chance. Maya is taken aback by this, blaming herself for having ruined a good thing again. However, Felix tells her to stop feeling sorry for herself. Just because things didn’t work out between them doesn’t mean that they won’t work out with someone else. The fact that Maya came out to meet him and put her heart on the table shows that she has undergone significant development in the past few months.

She is much more open to a relationship now than she was back at Felix’s daughter’s birthday party. And while that is a good thing, it doesn’t change the fact that he moved on in her absence. This is perhaps the first time she realizes that the world does not stop spinning while she has put her life on hold, which is quite a wake-up call. At the same time, Felix also assures her that not ending up together doesn’t nullify what they felt for each other or that what they had wasn’t real. It was because their feelings were so real that she was able to work through her issues and pave the way for the next thing in her life. In short, Felix is not the next big love of her life, but what she shared with him remains important still.

Do Maya and Jason Get Together?

Before Maya met Charlie, she had Jason. They’d known each other since college, and during a brief time in their long friendship, they also explored the possibility of a romance. Later, Maya tells Charlie that what they had cannot even be called dating, because it soon became clear to both of them that there was nothing romantic between them. Charlie assures her he isn’t jealous, and they never talk about it again. But then, Charlie passes away, and things change. One would think that Maya would lean on her friends and family in this trying time. But she is gripped by guilt and, instead of facing reality head-on, she packs two suitcases and runs away from it all.

It isn’t until a few years later, when she is at a restaurant in London with Felix, that she sees Jason again. They are both surprised to see each other in such an unexpected way, but while he is glad to see her again, she doesn’t seem even remotely interested in finding out what he is up to. When he confronts her about shutting everyone out and breaking off all contact, the conversation is cut short as she tells him to go back to his group while she walks out with Felix. Even after she breaks up with Felix, she doesn’t immediately reach out to Jason again. In fact, it will take her a couple more years to do so. By that time, she is settled in Luxembourg and has come to New Orleans for a conference. She leaves him a message, not knowing if he’s still angry with her, but he responds, and they meet.

Maya begins with apologies, but things cool down between them pretty quickly. This is also when she realizes just how much her best friend has changed. Back then, everyone knew him to be a heavy drinker and somewhat of a glutton. But now, he has given up alcohol, has turned vegan, and has turned New Orleans into his home. The ease with which Maya and Jason slip back into their old roles shows that time has done nothing to dampen their bond, even if they have a lot of catching up to do. This, however, does not mean they will find their romantic spark again. If anything, once again, Maya is reminded how the world kept moving forward while she threw herself into a state of limbo.

Any lesser film would have used this reunion to rebrand Maya and Jason’s relationship. Suddenly, they would have found love, realizing they were meant for each other all along. Instead, ‘Love of Your Life’ keeps that platonic energy. They talk about their lives and the death of their beloved Charlie. And when the time comes, Jason drops her off at the airport, asking if it’ll take another 5-10 years before they see each other again. She assures him that won’t be the case and even offers to spend Thanksgiving with him like they used to before she ran away. He agrees to this, showing that not all bridges have been burned and that, slowly, she might even be able to return to her old life, where seeing old friends won’t remind her of losing Charlie.

Why does Maya Meet Ruth? What Does the End of Charlie’s Tape Mean?

While Maya patches things up with Jason, it doesn’t mean she has settled everything with everyone from her past. At the airport, she realizes what she needs to do and leaves immediately. Since so much focus has been on her romantic life, one wonders whether this is her suddenly realizing her love for Jason and returning to him to start a new life together. However, the viewers’ own expectations deceive them, and it turns out that she has gone to meet Ruth, Charlie’s mother. The last time they were in each other’s vicinity, Ruth screamed at Maya from outside her building, blaming her for Charlie’s death. Part of the reason for Maya’s sudden flight is the harsh words from her mother-in-law, whom she had grown to love and consider the mother she never had.

Once Maya is in front of her again, Ruth’s feelings resurface. It turns out that Maya going AWOL meant Charlie’s remains were left in a freezer for two weeks because his next of kin wasn’t there to have them released. Ruth also had to plan the funeral herself, only to realize she didn’t even know what kind of music her son listened to. As the situation lands on Maya, she apologizes thoroughly, and then Ruth apologizes too. She feels sorry for what she said last time, especially for blaming Maya. She also confesses that she never fully accepted Maya, who, in turn, reveals that she loved Ruth. The conversation unburdens both of them with the things that had been left unsaid for so long. In the end, Ruth encourages Maya not to feel guilty about living her life and trying to find love again.

At the same time, it emphasizes the importance of loving oneself before expecting love from someone else. The meeting is cathartic for Maya, who cries on the way back. It also marks the end of an era for her since the next thing that happens truly gives her the closure she needed to move on. Maya and Charlie met when she bought a cabinet from him. When he sold it to her, the drawer did not open, but she eventually managed to open it and found a cassette inside. It has a particular kind of music that moves her. On their first date, Charlie reveals he made that tape, but it is not an ordinary one. The tape has iron oxide, which he spliced in from an old brass recording. This means that as the tape is played, the oxide will start to dissolve. The more it dissolves and disappears, the more the recording’s sound will change.

It will get fainter with each iteration, until eventually, all the oxide is gone and there is nothing but white noise on the tape. For years, Maya clings to the tape and the music as she clings to Charlie’s memories. But soon after her patch-up with Jason and the conversation with Ruth, the tape runs out of sound, and all she has left is the white noise. This also represents her grief for Charlie, signifying that, like the white noise on the tape, the loss will remain with her forever. However, the slate of her future is also clean, leaving her open to possibilities of discovering new music. It brings her healing journey full circle, showing that while Charlie will always be in her heart and remain the love of her life, she will keep moving forward, starting with letting go of her guilt, accepting her grief, and choosing to love herself, no matter how hard it might seem sometimes.
