Soon after her daughter, Katia Valentina, was born, Mayra developed a high fever and had to undergo some tests. She left the room, but when she returned, her newborn was no longer there. What followed was a massive search, and later that night, the baby was found unharmed in a motel in Mexico City, Mexico. Netflix’s ‘A Child of My Own’ (originally titled ‘Un hijo propio’) features the case and includes an interview with Mayra, in which she shares her side of events.
Mayra Vega Stated That She Never Made an Agreement to Give Away Her Newborn
Mayra Aurora Navarro Vega was a single mother living in Mexico City, Mexico, in 2008 when she found out that she was expecting her second child. She first went to Hospital General de México on June 17, 2009, when she was ready to give birth. She and her partner, Ricardo Alejandro Noriega Ramírez, were blessed with a baby girl, whom they decided to name Katia Valentina. It was the happiest day for them. Since Mayra was running a high fever, she did not have many recollections of the day. She did remember a hospital staff member who identified herself as Eleanor Alejandra Marin Mendoza coming to speak with them.
Mayra said that Alejandra told her that she was conducting a survey and asked them a bunch of questions about their family life. When Ricardo walked in and asked who she was, she left the room. Mayra said that she was then called in to give samples for a test and she asked the other patient in her room to keep an eye on her baby. However, when she returned, the newborn was not there. She immediately alerted the hospital, and a search was initiated. Ricardo even appeared in the media and made a plea for his newborn to be returned. On June 18, 2009, shortly after midnight, Katia was found unharmed at the Hotel Hollywood with Alejandra and her husband, Arturo Calderón Gamiño. Both adults were taken into custody and charged with kidnapping.
Alejandra falsely claimed that she had met Mayra months before the incident and that they had a conversation. According to Alejandra, Mayra had allegedly told her that she was going to get an abortion and that she would rather give the baby away. Mayra, however, said that she had never had such a conversation with anyone, and this was supported by the evidence, as she had never even visited Hospital General de México before giving birth there. Alejandra had also falsely claimed that Mayra left the room and told her she was going to Chihuahua, which was why she had to walk away with the baby in a gift bag so the hospital would not know. Mayra denied that any of this had ever transpired.
Mayra Vega Has Publicly Stated That She Could Never Forgive Her Daughter’s Perpetrator
Mayra Vega got her newborn back on June 18, 2009. In 2011, during Alejandra’s trial, she was an important figure for the prosecution, as her testimony helped corroborate her version of events with evidence and establish that Alejandra had, in fact, kidnapped the baby. She has kept a low profile since then. In 2016, she gave an interview to the news agency Notimex, in which she shared her first-hand account of her experiences. In the documentary, she said that she could not forgive the woman who kidnapped her baby, no matter what. She described it as the most painful experience and said that she cannot move on because Alejandra did not feel any compassion when she stole her baby, and she cannot do the same. Mayra is otherwise a private person, and not much is known about her beyond the case.
