Lifetime’s ‘Surviving the Silence: The Roxane Gay Story’ follows Roxane Gay as she navigates a traumatic childhood experience and the lasting impact it has on her life. The film explores her relationship with her parents, Michael and Nicole Gay, and the role they play in shaping her early years as she grows up carrying experiences that she struggles to speak about. Julia Harnett and Ron Robinson bring Roxane’s parents to life on screen. Roxane Gay has also spoken extensively about her real-life parents and childhood. She has helped paint a picture of her upbringing and the experiences she endured shaped the person and writer she eventually became.
Michael and Nicole Gay Lend Their Real Names to the Fictional Characters in the Movie
‘Surviving the Silence: The Roxane Gay Story’ begins with Michael and Nicole Gay moving to a new suburb because of Michael’s job. They bring their daughter, Roxane Gay, and two sons with them and do their best to help her adjust to this new chapter in their lives. In real life, the circumstances are not very different either. Michael and Nicole Gay are Roxane’s real parents, both of Haitian descent, who came to the United States in search of a better life. Michael worked as a civil engineer for most of his life, while Nicole was a homemaker. The family moved around frequently because of his work, and when Roxane was 12, they eventually settled in Omaha, Nebraska.

There are many similarities between the film and the roles that Michael and Nicole played in Roxane’s life. After she dropped out of Yale, her parents tracked her down and supported her return home, determined to help her find her way forward. They enrolled her in college and continued to support her for a long time, something Roxane has spoken about openly over the years. The film portrays this side of their relationship beautifully. It shows the care, concern, and support they offered their daughter during a difficult period in her life. Roxane has also reflected on how her parents were financially stable enough to provide her with opportunities and a life that gave her access to education and security.
While Nicole Gay Passed Away in 2025, Michael Gay Leads a Quiet Life
In real life, Michael Gay was the owner of GDG Béton et Construction. His work meant that the family lived in several states, including Colorado, Illinois, Virginia, and New Jersey. Together, Michael and Nicole raised Roxane, Joel, and Michael in a loving and supportive household. They saw their fair share of ups and downs. Seeing Roxane grow into a celebrated writer and academic was undoubtedly a source of immense pride for them. In July 2021, however, the family faced a heartbreaking loss when Joel passed away.

Roxane has often expressed her gratitude for the love and support her parents gave her, and that appreciation comes through in much of her writing. Sadly, on February 18, 2025, the family had to endure another devastating tragedy when Nicole passed away. By then, she and Michael had been married for 52 years. Michael has remained a much more private person. He chooses a quiet life surrounded by his children and family.
