In Netflix’s ‘Moria,’ a young woman from a modest background explodes into stardom as Moria Casan. She becomes enamored with the revue and feels made for the stage. This bold step towards a career entirely new to her sets her on a sharp trajectory, bringing her fame and wealth beyond what she’d ever imagined. While she loses herself in her performances, her house is the place where she can leave behind all her worries and relax. Interestingly, one episode of the show focuses on a space rock landing in her backyard, becoming an important plot device that prompts Moria to reckon with the things she’d buried deep down. SPOILERS AHEAD.
The Space Rock in Moria’s Backyard is a Fictional Creation
While ‘Moria’ follows the real-life of the Argentine icon Moria Casan, it does so through a fictional lens. Instead of using a realistic perspective, the show leans into Moria’s brand of flamboyance and larger-than-life nature, which brings a unique touch to the storytelling. In using such unconventional narrative devices, the show takes things directly from Moria’s mind and materializes them as physical manifestations rather than presenting them as thoughts. This includes the part where a strange object from space lands in her backyard and plants itself right outside her window. The fact that everyone else can see this rock too means it is not a figment of her imagination, adding a new layer to its meaning.
Throughout the season, we see the oldest version of Moria looking back at her future, which is recreated in miniature figures. She looms over them like a giant from a different planet and even interacts with her past versions through words and the stormy weather. In one of those cases, her fake fingernail falls off her finger and lands in the miniature version of her house. For the Moria living that reality in that house, the fingernail appears as a giant space rock, which fascinates her. Slowly, however, Moria starts to see it as a way to communicate with a higher being, which turns out to be her own version from the future. Whenever she feels lost or uncertain, she spends some time by the rock to get a better perspective of her situation.
Around this time, she also starts working on her book, in which she is encouraged to delve into her childhood and tell the world her story from the beginning. Notably, while people have followed her career every step of the way, there are things that no one knows about her, especially from before she took to the stage and adopted the persona of Moria Casan. Initially, she is hesitant to discuss what she has left behind, but eventually it becomes clear to her that she must revisit those memories, no matter how painful, and properly resolve them to finally move on for good.
The Rock Disappears After Its Emotional Purpose is Served
Once again, as she is on the brink of a breakdown, especially as she recalls the abuse she suffered during her childhood, she seeks comfort in the strange meteorite in her backyard. Eventually, when the novel is written and she has processed her trauma, the rock disappears. In the grander version, the older Moria has taken back the nail and worn it on her finger again. However, on a deeper level, the rock’s disappearance signifies that Moria has faced the hard truth about herself, done the difficult thing, and is better for it. In some ways, the fingernail had become her emotional rock, but now that she has written the book and properly addressed her trauma, she doesn’t need that crutch anymore, and the rock disappears.
Since the rock has so much to do with her inner demons, one wonders why it was visible to others as well. However, this just goes to show that Moria didn’t have complete control over how she appeared to the world, despite her taking extreme measures to ensure she controlled her physical image, at least. The fact that everyone else can also see the rock means that Moria’s trauma, or at least the impact of it, is out there for the whole world to see. From the people close to her to the strangers who visit her house, everyone can see that she has personal issues to resolve. But she refuses to see things that way until she realizes there is no way around it.
The Real House of Moria Casan Never Had a Space Rock
In her genre-bending autobiographical book, Moria Casan talks of the fingernail tearing away at her past, present, and future, melding everything together. This context is used to create the space rock storyline in the show, but in real life, Moria Casan’s backyard remains entirely untouched by meteorites or otherwise. Located in Parque Leloir in the Ituzaingó district of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Moria’s house is a close reflection of her. The house is spread over 300 square meters, with 700 square meters covered with gardens that boast a wide variety of plants. Additionally, it has a heated pool.
It was initially intended as a weekend home, but over the years, Moria has grown to love the place so much that it has become her permanent abode. It has also undergone extensive renovations over the years. The interiors of the house reflect Moria’s love for extravagance, leaning towards her glamorous side rather than adopting a minimalist turn. The house is stacked with the art that Moria has collected over the years, ranging from paintings and sculptures to animal-shaped figurines. Neon lights and leopard prints have adorned her residence, morphing the place according to her unique tastes and giving it a distinctive touch, one that can only come from the legend that is Moria Casan.
