Why is it anticipated?: Hi, Deadpool here, taking over this lameass article. So you want to know why my film is anticipated eh? Well, having you fuc… oh sorry, I’m being told to keep it civil. So, have you fishing seen my first film? Watch it, and watch it again. Let how successful and awesome it is sink in. So we’re bringing you more of the same stuff – a heartwarming story at the core and world’s most foul-mouthed (that’s right Wolverine, you’re PG-13 in the movies now, so that title is mine!) and best fourth wall breaking superhero at the centre. Hold your breaths but keep your mouths closed, or a bird might drop something in there!
39. A Rainy Day In New York
DIrector: Woody Allen
Starring: Timothée Chalamet, Selena Gomez, Elle Fanning, Jude Law, Diego Luna and Liev Schreiber
Synopsis: Two young people arrive in New York to spend a weekend. Once they arrive they are met with bad weather and a series of adventures.
Why is it anticipated?: Woody Allen and New York city is perhaps cinema’s favourite romance between a filmmaker and a city. And he returns to his roots with this romance set in NYC on a rainy night. The lead pair of Timothée Chalamet, who mesmerised us all in ‘Call Me By Your Name’, and the gorgeous Selena Gomez, sounds like a perfect fit for a dreamy tale in the city of dreams.
38. Ocean’s 8
Director: Gary Ross
Starring: Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, Awkwafina
Synopsis: Debbie Ocean gathers a crew to attempt an impossible heist at New York City’s yearly Met Gala.
Why is it anticipated?: Well, ‘Oceans’s Eight’ looks to be yet another “girl power” remake of a Hollywood success (Hasn’t Hollywood learned anything from ‘Ghstbusters’?) It is a remake of a Clooney/Damon/Pitt flick from last decade, which was already a remake of a 1960 film! Nonetheless, the all-guns-blazing cast of Bullock, Blanchett, Bonham-Carter & Co. makes me hopeful that this will be a fun ride. In no way original maybe, but a whole lot of fun for sure!
37. Black Klansman
Director: Spike Lee
Starring: John David Washington, Adam Driver, Laura Harrier
Synopsis: The plot revolves around an African-American cop from Colorado who goes on to infiltrate the local Klu Klux Klan and later become the leader of the local chapter.
Why Anticipate: Spike Lee is known to have explored a wide range of socio-cultural issues in his movies, including racism, urban poverty, media and crime. The man has made some of the most important American films of the past 30 years including ’25th Hour’, ‘Malcolm X, and ‘Do the Right Thing’, and with this one, he looks pretty much in his zone, which is what makes the wait very exciting.
36. Birds of Passage
Director: Ciro Guerra
Cast: Natalie Reyes, Carmina Matinez
Synopsis: The film, set in Columbia, depicts the ups and downs of the Wayuu family, led by Rapayet Abucahibe and Ursula Pushaina.
Why Anticipate: From the land of the great Gabriel Garcia Marquez comes this wildly ambitious, emotionally challenging piece by a director who has time and again proved himself as a force to be reckoned with. The film is currently going through the post-production stages and we hope that it gets an early release this year.
35. Fahrenheit 451
Director: Ramin Bahrani
Cast: Michael Shannon, Michael B. Jordan, Sofia Boutella
Synopsis: ‘Fahrenheit 451’, adapted from Ray Bradbury’s dystopian novel of the same name, captures a frightening future American society where a young man goes on to rebel against the society.
Why Anticipate: Director Ramin Bahrani was hailed by the great Roger Ebert back in 2000s as “the director of the decade”. Bahrani received immense acclaim for his film ‘Chop Shop’ and he has also produced gems like ‘Goodbye Solo’, ‘Plastic Bag’ and at ‘Any Price’, all of which one numerous awards at various film festivals across the world. It would be fascinating to see the auteur turning Bradbury’s devastatingly powerful vision on to the screen.
34. Loro
Director: Paolo Sorrentino
Cast: Tony Servillo, Chiara Iezzi
Synopsis: The film chronicles the life of Italian media tycoon and politician Silver Berlusconi
Why Anticipate: Paolo Sorrentino, arguably one of the finest contemporary auteurs of cinema, is slowly becoming a favorite among staunch movie buffs. Though he has made some undeniably brilliant works like ‘The Consequences of Love’and ‘One Man Up’, this one clearly looks like his most ambitious work to date, and could well turn out to be his masterpiece.
33. Old Man and the Gun
Director: David Lowery
Starring: Robert Redford, Casey Affleck, Elisabeth Moss
Synopsis: The film tells the story of a an elderly bank robber who, after moving to a retirement community, decides to return to the scene to pull off one final heist.
Why Anticipate: David Lowery recently floored critics and cinephiles with ‘A Ghost Story’, and he teams up with Casey Affleck once again, which only heightens expectations. Affleck has been delivering one great performance after the other and though he has a supporting part to play here, it would be interesting to see him don the role of detective John Hunt.
32. Outlaw King
Director: David Mackenzie
Starring: Chris Pine, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Florence Pugh, Billy Howle, Tony Curran, Alastair Mackenzie
Synopsis: A true David v Goliath story of how the great 14th Century Scottish ‘Outlaw King’ Robert The Bruce used cunning and bravery to defeat and repel the much larger and better equipped occupying English army.
Why is it anticipated?: Robert The Bruce led Scotland during the First War of Scottish Independence against England. He fought successfully during his reign to regain Scotland’s place as an independent country and is today revered in Scotland as a national hero, so a film about his life story is bound to cause a buzz. ‘The Outlaw’ is the first in a trilogy about Robert the Bruce’s life story, and will be distributed by Netflix, who we know leave no stone unturned in scope as well as scale. But the main reason for my excitement is ‘Braveheart’ vibes!
31. Suspiria
Director: Luca Guadagnino
Starring: Dakota Johnson, Chloë Grace Moretz, Mia Goth and Tilda Swinton
Synopsis: A young American aspiring dancer (Johnson) begins attending a prestigious dance academy, only to unravel the academy’s dark and sinister secrets.
Why is it anticipated?: The Italian film ‘Suspiria’ (1977) is a cult classic in the horror genre, having received critical acclaim for its visual and stylistic flair, use of vibrant colors and its soundtrack. And remaking a classic is always a bad idea. The only reason we still have hopes from this remake is its brilliant director Luca Guadagnino. A modern retelling from a modern Italian director of his calibre doesn’t sound like such a bad idea after all.
