‘Acts of Violence‘ (2018) is an action/thriller directed by Brett Donowho. It centers on the MacGregor brothers, who use their military skills to help an incorruptible police officer (Bruce Willis) take down a human trafficking ring and their boss after the youngest brother’s fiance is kidnapped by the bad guys. Your typical “good guys shoot guns at bad guys and win” movie. If you want to watch more movies like that, here is a list of films that will blow your socks off with their action sequences.
7. Acts of Vengeance (2017)
Directed by Isaac Florentine, this Antonio Banderas starrer follows the story of a formerly fast-talking lawyer who takes a vow of silence, to be broken only after he has hunted down and exacted revenge on the killers of his wife and child. For this role, Antonio Banderas managed to shed his “sex symbol” image and swapped it for an action hero that delivers kicks and punches just as effectively as he does steamy kisses.
6. Baby Driver (2017)
Ansel Elgort stars in this action film directed by Edgar Wright. It’s about a man who risks his chance at freedom from a life of crime because a gangster threatens the safety of his girlfriend and forces him to partake in one last heist. Of course, things go downhill when it turns out that their arms dealers are a bunch of undercover cops. This one is critically acclaimed and definitely one to watch.
5. Atomic Blonde (2017)
Charlize Theron is Lorraine Broughton, an elite MI6 spy with lethal skills in this action movie by director David Leitch. This movie is set in 1989, just before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Lorraine is sent to take down the ring of bad guys and retrieve a dossier, all while looking absolutely stunning and immensely badass.
4. The Bourne Ultimatum (2007)
In this installment of the overall awesome Bourne series, Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) plays an ex-CIA assassin who has lost his memories to amnesia. But his combat skills are still intact. He goes after a CIA official in this one. Paul Greengrass directs this movie and is loosely based on the novel of the same name by Robert Ludlum. If you’re a fan of action, we recommend the entire series.
3. Mission Impossible: Fallout (2018)
Possibly the best one in the Mission Impossible franchise, this movie is directed by Christopher McQuarrie. The plot of the film follows Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his team as they try to stop the carnage that will be caused by three simultaneous nuclear attacks on different cities by a terrorist group. Also stars Henry Cavill, Ving Rhames, and Simon Pegg.
2. Taken (2008)
Liam Neeson, as Bryan Mills (ex-Secret Service agent), has a very particular set of skills, skills he has acquired over a very long career, skills that make him a nightmare for people like the kidnappers of his teenage daughter. This English-language French action-thriller film was written by Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen and directed by Pierre Morel. It also stars Maggie Grace, Famke Janssen, Katie Cassidy, Leland Orser, and Holly Valance. This is one of the most popular movies with “kidnapping” and “human trafficking” plotlines and is an absolute must-watch.
1. Die Hard (1988)
The best action/thriller on our list is a classic film directed by John McTiernan and written by Jeb Stuart and Steven E. de Souza. It stars Bruce Willis, Alan Rickman, Alexander Godunov, and Bonnie Bedelia. Hardworking cop Detective John Mclane (off-duty for his Christmas vacation) hopes to spend the holiday with his estranged wife. He arrives in Los Angeles, only to find himself in a hostage situation inside his wife’s office building. He has to single-handedly take down the whole gang of bad guys before they realize something is afoot. Alan Rickman stars as charming villain Hans Gruber, while Willis portrays the hero with grit and gravitas.
