Netflix’s ‘My Brilliant Career‘ follows the story of Sybylla Melvyn, who harbors the dream of becoming a writer while fending off one marriage proposal after another. The six-episode season begins as a love triangle, but by the end, it becomes clear that the protagonist has no intention of settling down, at least not until she has lived the dream of being a writer. Instead of giving her a happy ending with Harry, the man she loves, the finale ends on an exciting and uncertain note as Sybylla seems primed to start the next chapter of her life. So far, Netflix has not confirmed a second season, leaving a huge question mark about what comes next for Sybylla. Since it has not been tagged as a limited series, there is a good chance we may get another season, which would premiere sometime in 2028. SPOILERS AHEAD.
My Brilliant Career Season 2 Will Follow Sybylla’s Journey In the City
‘My Brilliant Career’ Season 1 ends with Sybylla waiting for the train out of her town. After spending a year working for the McSwats, she finds a way to get her father’s debt written off so she never has to go there again. All this time, she waits for a word from Harry, who is hesitant to go back to her until he has made enough money to give her the life he had promised when he still had Five Bob Downs. After some encouragement from Nell and Charlie, he decides to go back to her, but when he proposes marriage, she turns him down. While she had been ready to marry him a year or so ago, when she jilted Frank Hawden, much has changed since then.

She has realized that she was not built to be someone’s wife, and, more importantly, that she will never be able to pursue her dream of becoming a writer if she settles down with anyone, even if it’s Harry. So, she finishes her novel, and with the manuscript, she prepares to leave the town and chase her destiny. The first season followed the storyline of Miles Franklin’s novel of the same name. Should a second season happen, the show will most likely rely on the novel’s sequel, ‘My Career Goes Bung.’ It is not a traditional follow-up to the first book, but rather a rewrite that changes certain details of Sybylla’s life as described in ‘My Brilliant Career.’ Still, it does give a roadmap of what happens next as she moves to Sydney to become a writer.
The sophomore season of the Netflix series could borrow elements from the second book. With a ready manuscript, Sybylla will move to Sydney. Her aunt, Helen, had already moved there a few months back, seeking her own freedom with the help of her friend, Augusta. So, Sybylla won’t be entirely helpless in the city, as she will have two women she loves and admires to help her navigate this challenge. Augusta will likely help her find a publisher and perhaps even a job as a writer. This setting will open the door to the events of ‘My Career Goes Bung,’ where Sybylla is a published author, treading her own path while indulging in love affairs and exploring her life far more than she had in Caddagat.
My Brilliant Career Season 2 Will Introduce Sybylla to New People
With Sybylla moving to the city, ‘My Brilliant Career’ Season 2 will introduce several new characters that she crosses paths with. At the same time, we will also see the return of familiar faces. Philippa Northeast will return as Sybylla Melvyn, with Kate Mulvany as Augusta Beecham, and Genevieve O’Reilly as Helen Bossier, most likely joining her as main cast members. While Sybylla seems to have left Caddagat in the rear view mirror, her sister Gertie (Ella Oliphant) is still there. This means we might get to see more of her, Anna Chancellor’s Mrs. Bossier, and Alexander England’s Uncle Julius. The second season might also expand the story lines of the Kirby sisters, Nell (Sherry-Lee Watson) and Betty (Miah Madden).

As for her love interests, Jake Dunn’s Frank Hawden admitted defeat in the penultimate episode, giving up the desire to marry Sybylla since she was in love with Christopher Chung’s Harry Beecham. Since he already has a ticket to England, he decides to go home for good, which means we might not see him again. In the same vein, Sybylla also rejects Harry, who is on his own path, as he tries to reclaim the financial strength he had before he lost his house. Since Augusta will likely be a major part of Season 2, there is a chance that Harry might pop up and cross paths with Sybylla again. However, he will likely be a guest or recurring character, since the next season will explore new love interests for the protagonist.
