Nell Kirby is one of the first friends Sybylla Melvyn makes upon her arrival at Caddagat at the beginning of ‘My Brilliant Career.’ The stockman works for the Bossier family, taking care of their horses, placing special focus on the newest addition to the herd: Beau, an unexpected but cherished colt. Much like the protagonist, the young woman is also not one for romance and prefers to prioritize her work as a professional despite the many hurdles society places in her way.
Still, in a twist of fate, her paths end up crossing with Charlie, a drover by profession and a friend of Harry Beechum’s. Even though Nell isn’t in the market for a whirlwind romance, she still finds herself falling hard and fast for the charming stranger. However, between her duties to her family and her own aspirations, the stockman and the drover finding their happy ending remains challenged. SPOILERS AHEAD.
A New Year’s Party Becomes the Catalyst in Bringing Nell and Charlie Together
Nell and Charlie first meet after the stockman is summoned to Five Bobs Down, the Beechum’s estate, for an unusual inquiry. Sybylla is visiting Aunt Augusta, who is eager to foster the young woman’s writing talents. As a result, during this short getaway, the young Bossier heir is working on a novel with the intention of submitting it for publication. In her novel, she has created a character, Cora, based on Nell. Thus, she invites the latter over in hopes of doing some character study research. Coincidentally, Harry’s friend, Charlie, happens to be at the estate around the same time. Upon their first meeting, the duo’s mutual interest in each other remains evident. Still, romance is hardly the stockwoman’s strong suit.
Even so, Nell makes her interest in the drover known by attending the local Empire Day event a few days later, which is something of an anomaly for the woman who prefers horses to people. Naturally, her sister, Betty, takes notice of the same and instantly connects the right dots. Consequently, despite Nell’s shy protestations, Charlie ends up becoming a frequent presence around Caddagat, thanks to Nell’s meddlesome loved ones. Eventually, the unspoken courtship between them finally takes on a more solid form at the raucous New Year’s party. Right before the fireworks are set to go off, Charlie, who will be leaving town soon on another droving undertaking, asks Nell to come along with him. The request is weighty and carries many complications with it. Yet, as it cements the drover’s undeniable interest in the stockman, it leads to a shared kiss under a firework-lit sky.
Nell Finds Her True Calling and True Love in One Swing
Shortly after their first kiss, complications begin to pile up against Nell and Charlie. For one, the former learns about her younger sister’s affair with a cop, Jack Baker, which has resulted in a pregnancy. The father of the unborn child is unwilling to take his lover’s hand in marriage on account of the inter-racial reality of their romance. To make matters worse, Nell’s job at Caddagat also becomes a source of conflict around the same time. The stockman has been working for the family basically her entire life, ever since the passing of her father. Even though she’s talented and skilled at her job, she remains in her dead father’s shadow and is overlooked because of her gender.
Therefore, things reach a tipping point when Nell is passed over for the job of the foreman in favor of Jim, who is objectively underqualified for the job. Although there are unseen factors that have influenced this promotion, it makes one thing clear for the young woman: Caddagat is not the right place for her. When she discusses matters with her mother and her sister, who both encourage her to take up droving with Charlie, both for the sake of her professional and her love life. The eldest daughter is worried about leaving her family, deeming their well-being her responsibility. However, both Betty and their mother assure her that they can take care of themselves just fine. Thus, in the end, Nell decides to throw in her lot with Charlie, partnering up with him, in more ways than one.
