The winners of the 89th annual Academy Awards were announced today. ‘La La Land’ won the maximum number of awards: 6. In what could be the biggest fiasco ever in Oscar history first ‘La La Land’ was handed Best Picture trophy. After the producers had finished giving their speeches, somebody realized the mistake and stopped them. In what was part-embarrassing and part-heartbreaking moment, one of the producers himself announced ‘Moonlight’ to be the winner of Best Picture. This was truly shocking not just because of the fiasco, but also because almost everybody expected ‘La La Land’ to win. ‘Moonlight’s win, deserving or not, was easily the biggest Oscar upset since ‘Crash’ winning over ‘Brokeback Mountain’.
There were other a few surprises in store, especially in the technical categories. It seemed as if voters were keen to spread the love and not give everything to ‘La La Land’ (or for that matter ‘Moonlight’).
