Tragedy struck on January 24, 2023, when Lindsay Clancy strangled her 3 small children to death before attempting suicide in her home in coastal suburban Duxbury, Massachusetts. Her husband, Patrick Clancy, was out running errands and picking up takeaway for dinner at the time, only for him to find the horrific scene when he returned home less than an hour later. As explored in CBS ’48 Hours: Case by Case,’ he was obviously heartbroken by the entire ordeal, and the nightmare sadly hasn’t ended for him because the legal proceedings in the matter are still ongoing.
Patrick Clancy Once Led an Almost Idyllic Life With His Family
Labor & Delivery nurse Susan Clancy and Contracting Entrepreneur Chris Clancy welcomed Patrick Clancy into their world on June 15, 1988, as one of their two children. He thus grew up Catholic on the South Shore of Massachusetts, often referred to as the Irish Riviera, alongside his sister Erin Donahue. According to records, he has always been rather even-tempered and gentle, preferring to stay away from drama, be kind, and always give others the benefit of the doubt. He thus developed a passion for people, which eventually led him to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Business from Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island, before ultimately establishing a career in sales.

Patrick initially worked at a telecommunications company in Boston before finding his calling in Software Sales at Microsoft, which is a remote job. It was during this period that he first came across Lindsay Musgrove – it was the summer of 2013, and she was living with one of his forty-some first cousins. The duo immediately got along like a house on fire, with their romance developing so quickly that he brought her along as his date to the family’s beachside Fourth of July party. They seemed like a great fit to everyone around them, with Susan also getting to know her better as she evolved into a Labor & Delivery nurse and did a rotation at the same hospital.
Although their love seemed like a whirlwind, Patrick and Lindsay believed they had found their perfect match as they aligned on every core belief, value, and future expectation. Therefore, they happily tied the knot in a beautifully cozy ceremony while surrounded by all their loved ones in December 2016, which they followed with a Christmas-themed reception at a golf club. They subsequently settled down in the affluent coastal suburb of Duxbury, Massachusetts, where they welcomed three children into their world. While Cora Marie Clancy was born in late 2017, Dawson William Clancy was born in mid-2019, and he was followed by Callan Patrick Clancy in mid-2022.
Patrick Clancy Maintains His Wife Was Struggling With Her Mental Health in the Months Before the Incident
Patrick has always maintained that his wife was a loving partner and a dedicated mother at every step of the way in life, but she did seem to become a shell of herself after their youngest was born. As per his accounts, the Massachusetts General Hospital Labor & Delivery Nurse was consumed by motherhood and often even had trouble leaving the kids behind to even go to work. However, it really came to a head after Callan came into the world, as she seemed to dread going back to work after her maternity leave, resulting in them deciding it would be best if she extended it. He claims she had struggled with anxiety over the years, but it became so bad by the time the fall of 2022 rolled around that they were talking to doctors. That’s when she was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder.

Patrick has long maintained that he could see his wife struggling, so he never discouraged Lindsay from taking time away from work or speaking to as many medical professionals as she wanted. However, he admittedly didn’t grasp the severity of the situation until she really started opening up to him about feeling “numb,” having insomnia, and having really negative thoughts. He thus began sitting in on some of her virtual conversations with her therapist, only for him to feel like it was more focused on her medication management rather than the underlying cause of her issues. So, when Lindsay told him she had driven herself to the emergency room in November after 48 hours of no sleep and was prescribed additional medication, he suggested in-person psychiatrist visits.
However, Patrick could observe that nothing was helping as Lindsay seemed active as a mother but also overly tired while being on 12 different medications by mid-December 2022. Their parents had come around to lend a helping hand, yet nothing seemed to work, so the couple visited the perinatal care specializing Women & Infants Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island, on December 20. However, Patrick claims doctors there seemed hesitant to intervene in Lindsay’s care because they weren’t sure if her symptoms were side effects of her medications or an underlying postpartum issue. In the end, they sent her home, only for her to tell her husband she needed to be admitted somewhere because she was having “thoughts of wanting to die, and I feel numb to them.” So, on New Year’s, she willingly joined an inpatient program at McLean Hospital, a top-ranked psychiatric institution outside Boston.
Patrick Clancy Still Vividly Remembers the Day He Lost His Family
When Lindsay was discharged from McLean Hospital after 5 days with a prescription for an antidepressant – her 13th medication in 4 months – she seemed better. She claimed she didn’t have intrusive thoughts anymore and was feeling more rejuvenated than ever, which Patrick could definitely observe firsthand. They subsequently seemed to fall into a rather normal routine, with him often even leaving her alone with the kids without any worries to hang out with friends or run errands. He even testified to this in court in August 2026, stating that she genuinely seemed to be doing better. He also denied any allegations against her being a drug seeker, asserting that while her several doctor visits could seem wrong, she only ever sought help and the right medication. He further claimed that at no point did any medical professional use terms like postpartum depression to help them understand the situation better.
Patrick also claims that Lindsay seemed to be having one of the best days on January 24, 2023, after a long time, so it came as a complete shock to him when he returned home to silence. When he walked upstairs to the master bedroom, the door was locked, but he managed to bust it open, only to find it covered in blood and cold because the window was wide open. He looked out of it and found his wife lying on the ground in the snow, bleeding and hurt. He dialed 911 as he rushed to her, and he asked her what she had done while already on the phone with the dispatcher.
She admitted she had tried to kill herself, slashing her neck and wrists with a knife before jumping out of their bedroom window. He then asked where the kids were, to which she replied: “In the basement.” It was only after paramedics arrived at the scene that he left her to look for 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan. Patrick had forgotten he was still on call with the dispatcher, so his wails upon finding his 3 minor kids unconscious in the basement were recorded on the call. All 3 of them had exercise bands tied around their necks and were strangled – Cora and Dawson had sadly passed away, and Callan died at the hospital a few days later.
Patrick Clancy Has Forgiven Lindsay Clancy for the Harrowing Incident
On January 28, Patrick created a GoFundMe page from the hospital where Callan was taken off life support to ask the public for some help in paying for the medical bills and his kids’ funerals. Most of his message on that page eulogized his children, but he also asked them to join him in forgiving Lindsay, who was being treated for her wounds at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital while in police custody. “The real Lindsay was generously loving and caring,” Pat wrote. “All I wish for her now is that she can somehow find peace.” Since then, he has only ever reiterated that he has forgiven her.

Although Patrick publicly admitted he had forgiven Lindsay for her actions, having finally heard she possibly, allegedly, suffered from postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis, he didn’t speak to her. When she did call him through a psychiatrist in the days after the tragedy, he heard her explanation of allegedly hearing a man’s voice commanding her to kill the kids and then herself because it was her “last chance,” but that’s it. Once he had heard her admission and felt he knew what happened, he ended the call – it didn’t last for more than a couple of minutes. As per Patrick’s own account, the next time he spoke to her was roughly 6 months later, following which they only ever had brief, sporadic conversations. It was around the first anniversary of the accident that he asked her if any of her actions on the fateful day were intentional, to which she reportedly responded, “No, it just was, like, a snap of the fingers.”
Patrick Clancy is Now Remarried and Living a Rather Active Life in New York
In between this period, Patrick had taken an extended leave from work, traveled to South America to clear his mind, sold off the Duxbury home, and started afresh in Manhattan, New York. According to records, he relocated within 4 months of the incident and then dedicated himself to keeping his children’s memories alive. He established the Heard Foundation alongside some family members, seeking change in how parents’ perinatal mental illness is diagnosed and treated so as to ensure no one else has to endure what he did. He also ran the Boston Marathon in 2024 on behalf of a children’s medical charity while having the names of his 3 kids on him, and he helped build a playground in June 2025 to keep his kids’ legacy alive. On a professional front, we should mention that Patrick returned to work after 18 months, so he remains a remote Software Sales employee at Microsoft.

As for Patrick’s personal standing, the sailing club member, volunteer guide for blind runners, and fitness enthusiast is now happily remarried. He had filed for divorce from Lindsay in February 2024, by which point he had allegedly already started dating a woman by the name of Rachel Danis. They moved in together to his Upper East Side apartment in 2025 and tied the knot in a small ceremony in Central Park in April 2026. From what we can tell, Rachel is a board-certified Reproductive Endocrinologist & Fertility Specialist at Reproductive Medicine Associates of New York. The 2010 Barnard College graduate is also a published medical author and an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Science at Mount Sinai.

We should also mention that there seems to be no anger, bad blood, or frustration between Patrick and Lindsay now, so it wasn’t surprising that he was named a witness by both the prosecution and the defense during her 2026 trial. Even Lindsay’s attorney Kevin Reddington compassionately said in court on July 23, 2026, that Patrick “has suffered one of the worst tragedies that anyone could ever suffer… How that guy is not an emotional basket case is beyond me, but he is trying hard to move on with his life.” Patrick has also filed a wrongful death civil lawsuit against Lindsay’s healthcare providers, claiming that if they had listened to her issues and treated her as she needed, her 3 children would have been alive. In his lawsuit, he alleged that their “negligent treatment of Lindsay, including their complete failure to recognize and address the radical erosion of her mental health, resulted in tragedy, namely, allegations that Lindsay took the lives of her children.”
