Red Ash: The Indelible Legend: Everything We Know

A while ago Japanese video game maven, Keiji Inafune, promised us two games inspired by the iconic ‘Mega Man’ games, which Inafune himself had worked on earlier in his career. One was the action platformer ‘Mighty No.9’ and the other, an action-adventure game, titled ‘Red Ash: The Indelible Legend’.

‘Mighty No. 9’ turned out to be a huge disappointment but the latter has seemed to completely disappear from the face of this earth. Is ‘Red Ash: The Indelible Legend’ still being worked on? If it is, what can we expect from the game? Read on to find out everything we know.

Red Ash: The Indelible Legend Gameplay: What to Expect?

‘Red Ash: The Indelible Legend’ is an anime-inspired adventure Japanese Role-Playing Game (JRPG) presented from a third-person perspective. The game is a spin-off of developer Level-5 Comcept’s ‘Mega Man’ which inspired the 2016 platformer, ‘Mighty No. 9’.

‘Red Ash: The Indelible Legend’ follows the story of alternate versions of Beck and Call from ‘Mighty No.9’, both of whom salvage the waste parts of giant robots in a post-apocalyptic world. Beck was the ninth robot created by Dr. White as part of the Mighty Numbers line of robots and possesses the powers of transformation and Xel absorption (In the world of ‘Mighty No.9’, Xel are little cubes that robots are made up of). On the other hand, Call is a robot created by Dr. White’s friend Dr. Sanda. Both Beck and Call are protagonists in ‘Mighty No. 9’ and ‘Red Ash: The Indelible Legend’.

The story follows Beck and the allies as they try and save humanity after being driven to the point of extinction by a long drawn out war with robots. You start off by infiltrating the Mobile Citadel KalKanon in order to explore its village, castle and hidden dungeons in order to find the “Legendary Legacy” before the entire Mobile Citadel is blown to bits by electromagnetic cannons.

Set in a sprawling open world, ‘Red Ash: The Indelible Legend’ is an action-filled Role-Playing Game (RPG) with Third Person Shooter Combat. As alluded to in the plot synopsis, the game also features an upgrade system involving salvaged parts and equipment upgrades.

After Fuze Entertainment took over the production duties, a few new features were added to the list including a Challenge Dungeon with all new enemies, traps and enhanced difficulty for players who want an extra challenge. Another mode dubbed Call & Gofer Village Reconstruction is unlocked after the completion of the game. In this mode Call and Gofer work with the villagers to reconstruct the village.

Red Ash: The Indelible Legend Developers: Who Are the People Behind It?

‘Red Ash: The Indelible Legend’ is being developed by Osaka based video game development studio Level-5 Comcept. They are best known for games such as the 2016 action platformer ‘ReCore’ and the 2013 PlayStation Vita exclusive action RPG ‘Soul Sacrifice’. The studio was founded in 2010 by famed Japanese video game producer Keiji Inafune. Inafune is a veteran of the video game industry distinguished for his work on the original ‘Street Fighter’, ‘Mega Man’, ‘Lost Planet’ and ‘Dead Rising’.

‘Red Ash: The Indelible Legend’ has suffered through a rather long and arduous production cycle. Inafune initially sought to fund the project via Kickstarter crowdfunding with an initial target of $800,000. However, the game only managed to rake in about $520,00 during its crowdfunding run. Gamers were evidently apprehensive about funding yet another Inafune project due to the production difficulties and delays faced by his other major crowdfunded game, ‘Mighty No. 9’.

Just when it looked like ‘Red Ash: The Indelible Legend’ was destined to be canceled, Chinese console accessories company Fuze Entertainment announced a partnership with Level-5 Comcept to finance the game. This was way back in 2015, and we haven’t heard much about the game since then.

A prototype version of the game was released in 2015 but was severely lacking in quality and polish, leading to very poor feedback and public opinion souring even further. A related CGI anime short movie by Japanese animation company Studio 4°C titled ‘Red Ash: -Gearworld-’ (earlier known as ‘Red Ash: -Magicicada-’) was also funded via Kickstarter and released in March 2017.

Red Ash: The Indelible Legend Release Date: When And Where Can I Play It?

There is currently no set date for the release of ‘Red Ash: The Indelible Legend’. In fact, we cannot even be sure if the game is still in production. However, even if it does turn out that the game was being worked on for the past few years I wouldn’t expect a ‘Red Ash: The Indelible Legend’ to release anytime before 2021.

While ‘Red Ash: The Indelible Legend’ was initially only announced for PC, it was later expanded to include dedicated ports for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
