Created by Aaron B. Koontz and Luke Boyce, ‘Revival’ plays out a series of bizarre events in the small town of Wausau, Wisconsin. After a number of dead residents miraculously revive, Officer Dana Cypress is plunged into a murder mystery involving her own sister, Em. As it turns out, Em herself is one of the Revivers but has no idea about how she died, except for a few hazy memories. When an organ-trafficking ring and a militia of Revivers join in the chaos, all chances of getting to the heart of this supernatural mystery seem lost. However, by the tail-end of season 1, it is revealed that Aaron Weimer and Lester killed Em in a ritual to fulfill their own goals.
After Em discovers the truth and kills Lester, the time comes for her to reunite with her own soul and disappear for good, but the ending has something else in store. A flashforward reveals that the Revivers are now being slowly welcomed back into the community, especially with Blaine’s militia gone. However, Em is surprisingly alive and hiding out with Nithiya. While the creators have not greenlit a second season of the show as of writing, in the best-case scenario, fans can expect a sequel to come out by early 2028.
Revival Season 2 Will Likely Break Away From the Original Comics
Given how much of the ‘Revival’ season 1 finale is spent setting up cliffhangers, it is clear that a lot depends on a sequel tying up loose threads. While the creators haven’t announced a sequel as of writing, these cliffhangers might be their way of gauging viewers’ interests. For now, the biggest mystery is how Em managed to survive reuniting with her soul, and while there are theories as to what she and Nithiya might be, only a new episode can give us a concrete answer. It is entirely possible that Nithiya will shape up to be the grand antagonist of the story, potentially manipulating Em into working for her. More importantly, Dana seems entirely clueless about her sister’s current status, setting up a grand reunion down the line.
Interestingly, season 1 covers pretty much the entirety of the ‘Revival’ comic series, and the final sequence is an original addition. As such, going forward, the writing team will likely have to come up with entirely new plotlines, lore, and character arcs. One thing the story can focus more on is the mafia arc, especially since the grand kingpin character is mentioned very often, but never actually shows up on screen. With the criminal den of Wausau all but gone, this is the perfect time for a new, human villain to step in. Additionally, there is the mystery of the multicolored spirits, who may or may not be connected to alien lifeforms, both of which will likely come under Dr. Ibrahim’s specialization.
Revival Season 2 Might Focus More on Nithiya and Blaine
While ‘Revival’ may not have a confirmed sequel just yet, not a lot of changes are expected in the protagonist’s side of things. With Em’s death turning out to be a fake-out, fans can expect actor Romy Weltman to reprise her role for a potential season 2. Most likely joining her as the lead is actor Melanie Scrofano, who plays the role of Dana Cypress. While child actor Hudson Wurster is also likely to return as Cooper Cypress, actor David James Elliott may have a reduced role as Wayne Cypress, since the finale sees him retire as sheriff. Interestingly, actor Gia Sandhu, who briefly appears as Nithiya Weimer in the first season, might have a more prominent role going forward. This comes, of course, with the exit of actor Gianpaolo Venuta, who plays Nithiya’s husband, Aaron Weimer.
Among the characters who steal the show despite a smaller screentime is Blaine Abel, and while Steven Ogg has a good chance of stepping back into the role in season 2, it’s uncertain whether he will return in a minimal capacity or as the season’s antagonist once again. However, series creator Luke Boyce has confirmed that there is still a lot of Blaine’s story left to tell, so fans can be excited for him to return along with the show. Andy McQueen’s Ibrahim Ramin is likewise expected to continue, as he chooses to remain in Wausau to study Moore Creek and its effects on the Revivers. At the same time, we might get a new actor for the mysterious, unnamed kingpin, who has been calling the shots from outside Wausau, but might be making an appearance soon.
Revival Season 2 Can Expand on the Cypress’ Tragic Past
A big theme in the first season of ‘Revival’ has been coming to terms with one’s past, and that seems to be the key to becoming whole with oneself. Neither Em nor Dana, however, has reconciled with the death of their mother, and that is likely one of the reasons why the creators have decided to bring Em back to life. Her relationship with her father is also one of the plot points that has gone relatively untouched, and given how disturbed he is by Em’s disappearance, her return with a sequel can easily set up some powerful emotional beats.
Ibrahim and Dana’s relationship is also a direction that the story can expand on, especially given his decision to stay in town to research Moor Creek. While the two may have polar opposite jobs and narrative roles, it does bring the story together in many ways and easily introduces a welcome genre shift. Among the more unpredictable dynamics, however, is that of Nithiya and Em. So far, we have only seen Nithiya filtered through the perspective of Aaron, but with him gone, a completely different side of this story may be unfolding. The fact that Nithiya hands Em a skull-themed jacket might suggest that they have become allies over the span of a month, but until a new season is greenlit, the trajectory of Dana and Em’s shared journey is still up in the air.
