Tara Grinstead Was Declared Dead Five Years After Her Mysterious Disappearance
On November 14, 1974, in Hawkinsville, Georgia, William Ray AKA Billy and Faye Bennett Grinstead welcomed Tara Faye Grinstead into the world as a little bundle of joy. Growing up with her sister Anita Grinstead, Tara was an active member of the Baptist church and a cheerleader in school. After graduating from high school, she began entering beauty pageants and even won the title of Miss Tifton in 1999. She used the winnings from the pageants to help pay for college, attending Middle Georgia College in Cochran. By 1998, Tara started her journey as an 11th-grade history teacher and a cheerleading coach at Irwin County High School in Ocilla.

In 2003, she earned a master’s degree in education from Valdosta State University. The devoted history teacher was known for her compassionate, generous, trusting, and kind nature. She also had a dog named Dolly, whom she considered a part of her family. In 2005, Tara was reportedly considering pursuing a doctoral degree to further her education. On October 22, 2005, she attended a local beauty pageant to coach a few young contestants before going to a barbecue party. Later that night, she returned to her home in Ocilla, where she lived alone. Unfortunately, that was the last time anybody saw her.
A couple of days later, on the morning of October 24, when the 30-year-old history teacher failed to show up at the high school, her coworkers and friends became concerned and informed the police. The authorities visited Tara’s home and found her car parked in the driveway. Inside, they noticed that her purse and keys were nowhere to be seen, with her cell phone inside, the bedside lamp broken, and her alarm clock under the bed. Besides that, the police found no sign of a struggle or forced entry. Nearly five years after her disappearance, and with no sign of her, she was officially declared dead in 2010.

Tara Grinstead’s Perpetrators Were Apprehended Years Later, Thanks to an Unexpected Tip
In the years after Tara Grinstead’s disappearance, the detectives chased down hundreds of tips, but they all turned out to be dead ends. Finally, in 2017, they received a tip from Brooke Sheridan, who claimed that her boyfriend, Bo Dukes, told her that his former roommate and schoolmate, Ryan Alexander Duke, killed Tara while trying to burglarize her home in October 2005. Both men attended Irwin County High School, where Bo was one of Tara’s students. According to Brooke, Ryan allegedly used Bo’s truck to move Tara’s remains to Bo’s family’s pecan orchard. It is alleged that after showing Bo the site where Ryan had disposed of her remains, Bo helped him burn them in a fire pit.

Following Brooke’s interview, the police also interrogated Bo, who gave a similar account of the tragedy. Armed with enough evidence, in February 2017, the authorities arrested and charged Ryan Duke with the murder of Tara Grinstead. During his interview, he claimed that he was intoxicated and in the middle of stealing from her purse when she caught him red-handed. He then allegedly strangled her to death before moving her remains to a different location. The following month, on March 3, 2017, it was announced that Bo Dukes had also been arrested and charged with attempting to conceal a death, hindering apprehension, and tampering with evidence.

A few months later, Bo was also charged with two counts of making false statements, one count of hindering apprehension of a criminal, and one count of concealing the death of another, in light of the statements he made to the authorities during a 2016 interview. A couple of years later, on March 19, 2019, Bo Dukes’ trial commenced. In the end, he was convicted of the charges against him. On March 22, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison for his role in covering up the crime for years. On May 9, 2022, Ryan Duke’s murder trial got underway. During the trial, he maintained his innocence and alleged that Bo Dukes killed Tara. Ultimately, on May 20, he was found guilty only of concealing a death and acquitted of all the charges related to Tara’s murder. A few days later, Ryan was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
