Kate Wyler returns in the fourth season of Netflix’s ‘The Diplomat,’ trying to keep everything from falling apart. The season picks up from the Season 3 finale, in which Kate discovered that Grace and Hal had stolen Poseidon, the Russian weapon of mass destruction. Knowing the truth will inevitably come out, she prepares for the fallout while trying to convince herself it was the right decision in the long run. By the end, however, she is forced to change her mind, leading to a decision that could completely change the face of the Penn administration. The cliffhanger suggests there is more to the story, but Netflix has not yet greenlit the next installment of the show.
Season 4 dropped on October 15, 2026, and the streaming service usually takes some time to assess the series’ performance before deciding its future. However, the past two seasons received early renewals, which makes one wonder why the same pattern didn’t hold this time around. Still, the second season was renewed a month after the first and released about a year and a half later. Given the show’s success with critics and fans alike, it is fair to assume that a Season 5 renewal is around the corner. Considering the pattern of the previous releases, ‘The Diplomat’ Season 5 is expected to release sometime in late 2027. SPOILERS AHEAD.
The Diplomat Season 5 Can Go Either Way for Kate Wyler
As an ambassador, Kate Wyler’s job is not just to deliver the President’s message to the UK administration. Instead, she prefers to offer an interpretation of the message, which she tweaks depending on the situation. With Grace Penn, she has to resort to heavily edited interpretations of the messages, and even then, the mess is made. The thing is that there is only so much Kate can put up with. She had had reservations about Grace’s actions since Season 2, but somehow she convinced herself it was all for the good of the nation. But now that Grace has begun punishing the dissenters, starting with Stuart, Kate cannot just stand by and watch. So, in the middle of the G7 conference, she resigns and walks out.

One ambassador walking out this way could be ignored, but then Billie and Ganon follow suit, and things get worse for Grace by the minute. In the end, the trio sees Hal walking out of the door as well, indicating that he has also resigned and joined in their protest against their President. The final scene has Hal addressing the press, and what he says will define where Kate’s, and more importantly, Grace’s story goes next season. In the first scenario, if Hal discusses their resignation and the reasons behind it, Grace could find herself in a very difficult situation. The whole administration could turn against her, not to mention the NATO and G7 members.
Her position as the President could be challenged, and that would change the whole game. It is equally likely that Hal did not resign after all, and Kate and the others would find out as soon as he starts talking to the press. In that scenario, Kate would find herself in a much trickier situation. In any case, the events of the fifth season will likely take the titular diplomat back to the US, which is a whole different ballgame. This would also be the opportunity for the show to present the story from a fresh lens, while keeping the characters and the audience on their toes.
The Diplomat Season 5 Will Introduce New Important Characters
Based on the route the story takes, the fifth season of ‘The Diplomat’ will introduce new characters as Kate continues to wade through a fraught political landscape. We have already been introduced to Jodie Whittaker’s Bethan Vaughn, who will continue to serve as the Prime Minister. Abigail Marlowe has also joined the fray as Robyn Palmer. Since Vaughn has seemingly fired many people from the previous administration, new staff members will also be introduced. If the characters return to Washington, a whole new slate of characters will be waiting for the protagonist. Meanwhile, the show will continue to build upon the story of Keri Russell’s Kate Wyler.

It will also mark the return of Rufus Sewell as Hal, Allison Janney as Grace Penn, Bradley Whitford as Todd, Ato Essandoh as Stuart, Ali Ahn as Eidra, Nana Mensah as Billie, and Miguel Sandoval as Ganon. Rory Kinnear’s Nicol Trowbridge resigns as the PM, but it remains to be seen what role, if any, he will play in the future events. Meanwhile, David Gyasi’s Austin Dennison meets a shocking end, and we will likely not see him again. A question mark also looms over Aidan Turner’s Callum Ellis, who went missing after the first episode or so and will likely not be part of the story going forward.
